Microsoft listens to the critics

When Microsoft announced its new mobile OS in February, it was called Windows Phone 7 Series. Most everyone raved about the new OS, but its name got a lot of flak.

Many complained that it was an overly wordy and complex name that didn't exactly roll off the tongue. Others joked that BMW might take offense over the 7 Series moniker which is used for its flagship luxury sedan.

Microsoft has listened and the OS will now be known as Windows Phone 7 from here on out. The news was relayed via a brief Twitter message by the Windows Phone team.

Now if only Microsoft could do something about true multitasking and copy/paste...

Too bad they can't listen to critics on more important things, like multitasking and copy and paste as you mentioned, Brandon.

Indeed. People who care what a product is named can buy all the Apple products they want.

...I want MS to learn from Apple's mistakes, not repeat them.

EXACTLY.

It's rather pathetic to see that Microsoft thinks its best way to resuscitate its comatose mobile OS is to copy the least developed competitor's feature set and put a Windows design on it... actually it's worse than pathetic, it's simply depressing.

They think releasing info on the name of the OS is more important than releasing any info the OS itself? Who cares about its name, lol.

Its like Zune vs. Ipod thing all over again. Once again Microsoft make a bad copy of another company's existing product that is years late to the party and functionally worse than the already years old original.

Microsoft deserve to fail for their lack of innovation.

Windows 7 surpasses 10% market share

Last month, Windows 7 crossed into double-digit market share numbers. Microsoft disclosed that it sold more than 60 million copies of Windows 7 by the end of 2009, and now we know this very quick growth has continued through the first quarter of 2010.

Microsoft's first-ever Windows Summit, to be held from May 25th to 27th, will include keynote addresses from Windows executives, as well as technical breakout sessions and face time with technical experts in the Windows organization.

The event, which includes a $399 registration fee, includes tracks for developers that work with systems, devices, and software, and will focus on issues such as performance and reliability, improving battery life and implementation of touch-enabled PCs.

Through direct interaction with Microsoft staffers, developers will be able to sharpen their skills around the technologies in Windows 7 and Internet Explorer, according to Microsoft.

"This is a special opportunity to learn -- straight from the Windows team -- how you can best use Windows 7 and Internet Explorer to enable great solutions for your customers," according to the Microsoft Windows Summit 2010 Web site.

Michael Angiulo, general manager for the Windows Planning and PC Ecosystem teams, and a 16-year Microsoft veteran, will deliver the opening keynote. Angiulo helms Microsoft partner engagement programs including WinHEC, Logo programs for hardware and systems, and one-to-one engagements with top tier OEMs, IHVs and ISVs.

Microsoft says Windows Summit 2010 is specifically aimed at developers who haven't attended a Microsoft event in the past 18 months, a time frame that goes back to the October 2008 Professional Developer Conference and November 2008 WinHEC conferences.
