Microsoft readies new updates for its Windows Mobile operating system

With all the talk of Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system moving closer to RTM, it's rather easy to overlook another new OS release waiting in the wings. MSMobileNew reports that Microsoft is readying some updates to its Windows Mobile operating system.

According to Microsoft senior vice president Pieter Knook, the company plans to offer mobile OS updates on a yearly basis. At the end of this year, we'll see Windows Mobile Crossbow achieve RTM status with a public release on tap for the first half of 2007. The OS will still be based on Windows CE 5.x and will features some UI updates including refreshed title bar/soft keys and Vista-style icons. Crossbow will also feature tight integration with such Microsoft applications as Office 2007 and Office Communicator.

Next up on deck for Microsoft's mobile OS offerings is Windows Mobile Photon. This OS will be based on CE 6.0 and is expected to be released in the first half of 2008.

can't touch my linux broadsword or my mac quantum torpedo

seriously these names are way too edgy for microsoft, it must be a mistake. perhaps this is like "longhorn" and the final name will be windows sunshine or windows oaktree?

It'll probably be Windows Mobile 6. Previous version's codenames have been Merlin and Talisker.

What's so new?

So I'm looking at this screenshot trying to see what is new. It looks almost exactly like my current WM5 device (HTC Wizard) with the exception of a couple taskbar icons which are different between providers.

Did you read the article? It clearly states,

Which exactly what you noted, visually. There shouldn't be an obvious cues to the Office 2007 integration.

I understand they will change things that aren't very noticeable. But why show off these screenshots when they're not really different then WM5?

yeah, after a quick glance it looks a bit like OPIE
(which is far superior to the horrible WinCE gui
in every aspect)

I have a WM5.0 device (Cingular 8125) and I love the OS. I would like to imagine that the update would be free as I just purchased this device new last month, but I am not holding my breathe on that one.

LOL! You're stuck with what you got dude. Cell providers don't update the phone's OS unless it's to fix bugs. They want you to buy a new one with another 2 year commitment.

Can't wait to udate

The update MS is about the drop is a well needed update. I wan't a well looking GUI, not some watered down MS 2000 crap.

I have the mda about to jump ship for the bigger screen better keyboard 8125 and as soon as they let the update loose I'm on it. It doesn't really matter if my provider gives out a version for their phones or not. I can always get and use their network settings if thats the case.
