Microsoft Surface Globe

Microsoft Rebound
Touch Pack was previously OEM only

Windows is the most widely used operating system in the world. The latest version of the consumer operating system, Windows 7, was built for the ground up with the popular technologies and interfaces of today in mind such as touch.

One of the big features of Windows 7 was its integrated support for PCs that were capable of taking advantage of touch. In May of 2009, Microsoft announced that a new Touch Pack was coming for Windows 7. The Touch Pack added in several cool features and applications for touch capable computers that extend the usability and entertainment value for Windows users.

The Touch Pack includes Microsoft Globe Surface, which is a 3D globe letting people manipulate the globe and get information about places using touch. Surface Collage lets users view and manipulate images on the screen using their hands. Surface Lagoon makes a water simulation that works as a screen saver with a fish in it. The user can cause ripples and make fish swim away by touching the screen. Other components include a game called Microsoft Rebound and Microsoft Garden Pond.

After a long wait of almost a year, Microsoft has announced this week that the Touch Pack for Windows 7 is now available for download. The touch pack included three games and three Surface Applications. Previously the Touch Pack was only available to OEM computer makers looking to include it on PCs they were selling.

Anyone can download the Touch Pack now from Microsoft free of charge. That is anyone with a legitimate version of Windows 7 and the time to download a 239.2MB file.

Where is a good place to go for touchscreens?

Can a secondary display be a touchscreen? I think that would be awesome to run a second display off an HTPC and either be able to use as a seperate display and then toggle to a clone display if I needed to control the media center.

Dude. I'm dumbstruck by the simple genius.

CAN you run just a single touchscreen to the side while your main display is traditional (and fingerprint free)?

Most definitely. I have done it with a CarPC. Liliput touchscreen cloning a Vista laptop display, worked like a charm. It wasn't multi-touch or Windows 7, but I can't imagine that they would remove that functionality...?

Sure. I have an HTPC I built into a Thermaltake case that has a small touchscreen in the case itself as a secondary to the TV. Been on the market for years.

I got the Hantech Tablo for Laptops yesterday on Woot. It's a pen adapter that can work on your screen, or a surface. I hope this works with it! Here's what I am talking about. Neat little device!

I've enjoyed using my Latitude XT2 (With ssd drive) with the display dpi to set to 125% (Makes it perfect for closing apps with touch) but its TIME for something a bit more... 'everything'.

So I could run in a clone or individual desktop. Something with a range of about 60 feet perhaps?

...we have the choice of streamlining the OS/Windows. There are tools/gadgets to do so but you may not know that as you use apple products

I prefer freedom. Enjoy Apple.
