Virtually send Wii games as holiday gifts

Nintendo will later today launch a new feature on the Wii that will make gift giving this holiday season a little more convenient. A new Gifting function will allow users with Wii to send Virtual Console games to those with whom they have traded Friend Codes.

Virtual Console games are purchased from the Wii Shop Channel at a starting price of 500 Wii Points ($5). Classic NES titles typically start at 500 points, SNES games at 800 and N64 at 1000. Virtual Console games from other classic systems such as the Sega Genesis, TurboGrafx-16, MSX and Neo Geo are also available.

The new Gifting feature will also take out some of the guess work in virtual gifting. Should the recipient already own a particular game gift, the sender will be immediately notified to choose another title.

Launching alongside the Gifting feature is the first Pokémon game to hit the Virtual Console – Pokémon Snap – originally for N64. As an added bonus, pictures taken as part of the gameplay in Pokémon Snap can be posted to the Wii Message Board and shared with friends.

Other new additions to the Wii Shop are Ghosts'n Goblins from the NES and Baseball Stars 2 from the Neo Geo.

My sister and her new husband are complete Wii addicts. I got them a gift certificate to Best Buy, a Wii console holding stating with memory card and Wii points card. Easiest holiday shopping i've done!

No Wii for me though, im simply too busy with all the kick ass games for my 360, Mass Effect has taken over my life.

I am a die-hard mario kart 64 fan, but my N64 died years ago. I just read about the virtual console capabilities of the wii, and that sold me on it. (The last console I bought was a PS1, so that I could play FF7 and Metal Gear Solid.) Now the problem is finding a damn system on store shelves.

While Mario Kart is available on Wii through the virtual console, the drawback to it and some of the other classic N64 games like Star Fox (same with GoldenEye if they ever released it) is the controller aspect. To re-create the epic 4 player matches of yesteryear you'd need 4 Wiimotes with 4 classic controllers (a very expensive proposition) or 4 GameCube controllers and return yourself to the corded era.

Don't get me wrong, I think the Virtual Console is a great edition to the Wii, but having to re-buy the games you already own(ed) on N64 and coming up with a 4 controllers can be a bit pricy to play old (but admittedly great) games.

better. i bought 2 turbo wireless gcn controllers for $5 apiece off ebay. great for playing streets of rage 2.

Nope and it's a frickin' travesty. I'm pretty sure Nintendo has the rights to GE, but I still don't know whether Perfect Dark can appear on Virtual Console or Xbox Live Arcade. I think and hope Rare has the rights and it would appear on Live so the graphics could be bumped and there could be online play... <drool> Either way, I can't believe they're not available yet. I wonder if maybe the Wii emulator is too slow?

I agree Perfect Dark Multi player online... *Drool*.

But I read somewhere awhile ago, that several companies in the snes era either have Bad Tidings with Nintendo or no Longer Exist, and thus Nintendo just remove they're Logo's names etc from the game, I think it would be a Similar Situation with the Ninentdo 64, I guess they just have to work on the games a bit more to be fit for the Wii.

Remember years ago before the Wii was released how they were suing Rom Sites? Well now we know why, I never thought back then they would Emulate older consoles on a modern one to make more money.

wow I remember that game... the problem is that 2 completely sucked, the best version was the original Baseball Stars. Customizable teams and players, men and women players, etc.

I believe this is the Neo Geo version of Baseball Stars 2, which is much different then that Romstar Baseball Stars 2 crap they threw at us. It still does not have customizable teams and players, however, it's a much better game all around than the NES version of Baseball Stars 2.

Original Baseball Stars for NES > * as far as video game baseball goes.


Party Console ..

I have completely resisted any urge to buy a Wii so far. I'm actually just content with a PS3 (the urge to buy a 360 is much stronger) since I don't have that much time to play games but am enjoying the recent semi-surge of games.

But I will be buying a house next year and my casual gaming friends love to play the Wii when they get together and drink. So I shall be buying a Wii, and hopefully it won't be too damn hard to buy one after the holidays.

yeah. rare owns some of these. so doubtful goldeneye, perfect dark, donkey kong 64, or killer instinct will grace our virtua console in the near future.

the ONLY true casuality of rare being converted to the dark side (i.e. microshit) is the loss of perfect dark.

let's see what else awaits the vc:

battletanx, mario party 1-3, peace keepers, super-bomberman, vigilante 8 1&2, super street fighter 2, chrono trigger, omgthislistgoesonandon....

the best part is nintendo now has the means to offer the worlds best virtual game library...permenently...in legal download form. and since it can be linked to a my-nintendo account, it will could even transfer over to any future system.

Virtual Console screams for the Super Nintendo Final Fantasy games. Nintendo needs to get Square on board. They'd sell a ton of Final Fantasies. Maybe they could even write new games for the SNES platform and sell them for $20.
