My family has an understanding that your gift if your presence at dinner, church and around the Christmas Tree.

An IPod or Wii can be purchased anywhere and is replaceable on a moments notice. The time you have with your family is limited and irreplaceable once it's gone.

Merry Christmas!

True words that are often forgotten.

Now that is a post that deserves a 6.

Totally agree there, my family has removed the whole gifts aspect of it for 2 years now and we couldn't be happier. It shouldn't be about commercialism and materialistic belongings, it's about family and spending time together.

Now the turkey and cooking other family recipes I can't do without.

Very well said.

That's the true meaning of the holiday for sure. My family does give gifts however, its usually just little appreciation gifts though for the adults (ie. money or clothes for instance) the kids in the family is where the bulk of giving goes.

But -- nothing is expected, I never expect anyone to give me a gift, nor do they from me.

We do it because we want to do it.

Besides I have so many nephews and nieces even if I drop only $25 on each one it still equals several hundred dollars.

The holidays would be less stressful if more people followed this plan. Use the time off around the holidays to see family and friends. I don't need a holiday to buy stuff. I am an adult, I can buy what I want when I want it.

Bah Humbug!!

The only Xmas movie worth watching is Bad Santa. It demonstrates the true spirit of the holidays.

The one Christmas tradition I follow each year is to get hammered and watch that movie.

Being employment challenged this Christmas, I won't be buying gifts this year. I'm the Grinch. I'll be making custom fancy soap bars instead using "existing inventory" of materials from my previous exploits doing that for fun.

You're that guy who makes bar of soap bongs?

What is a soap bong? :-)

Only my relatives and friends have seen my "work". :-)

P.S. - They really aren't "bars" exactly.

My gifts to you, paltry as they are, are season's greetings and the hope that employment comes knockin' at the door faster than your soap dries.

I don't buy them myself. Don't really want to be a part of this whole "Holiday Sales" charade. I'm not an anti-capitalist or anything, just that being a university student is financially challenging.

In return though, I don't expect anything. Maybe it had to do with the fact that no one really has given me anything because my birthday is so ill-timed. Come Christmas, everyone's either in Taiwan/China/Hong Kong or somewhere else like California.

Besides. Best gift is that of friendship and time well spent with friends and family. No need for material gifts, I got 364 days to buy those things for myself.

I guess I am different. I like (check that .. no I LOVE) shopping for gifts during the last few days leading up to Christmas. It's my favorite time of year even with all the comercialism (which really I think is a added bonus). People are right though it's not really the gifts that count just time spent with those your close to.

I think a better poll question might be whether the stuff you bought on Black Friday / Cyber Monday was for yourself or for others.

After Christmas
By ViroMan on 12/4/2009 11:07:39 PM , Rating: 2
My family knows that I will get them presents after Christmas. Im not terribly rich so I buy things after Christmas when things go on super sale. My family can expect there presents to come in January. Doing my shopping this way I can buy things as if I was rich.

I basically keep my eyes open until the price of the product is good. Good as in the biggest bang for my money.
