One of the key benefits of virtualization is security - the isolation of services into their own virtual "appliances". A security breach in one virtual machine does not impact the others, containing and isolating the intruder.

In combination with the new KSM functionality (kernel shared memory) in Linux, running multiple copies of the same OS is now very memory efficient - but still secure (using copy on write).

...that's not a benefit of virtualization, since if you were running separate physical machines, you'd have the same isolation.
