Storage devices are aimed at Mac users with Thunderbolt ports

Western Digital has announced a new storage device called the My Book Thunderbolt Duo Dual-Drive Storage System. This is the first Western Digital external hard drive to use Thunderbolt technology.
 
Western Digital says that the new external storage drive offers several areas of performance with double safe data protection, fast data transfer rates, a customized to drive storage system with RAID 0, 1, and JBOD options. The drives inside the enclosure are customer serviceable and there are two Thunderbolt ports that allow daisy chaining of multiple My Book Thunderbolt Duo storage devices.
 
Western Digital says that these high-speed storage devices are perfect for any computer with a Thunderbolt port and are ideal for video or music editing, 3-D rendering and other high-definition graphics intensive uses.
 
The My Book Thunderbolt Duo is available now online and in select retail stores with a 4 TB unit selling for $599.99 and the 6 TB unit selling for $699.95.
 
These drives are the latest in a series of expensive Thunderbolt accessories that have hit the market. Back in January Belkin unveiled expensive Thunderbolt laptop docks.

Too much

The list price of their other 4TB with other connections is $429. ($340 street price)
That's too much too.

But I don't think a thunderbolt connection costs an extra $260. Wouldn't be worth it until you start using SSD and the connection speed makes a huge difference.

You're right. USB 3.0 bandwidth exceeds virtually all current HDD/SSD transfer rates.

I think Thunderbolt should stop being marketed as a external storage solution (like Firewire was) and marketed for its other capabilities (like external video controllers, displays, and CPU's)

You mean when you need high bandwidth, low latency, Direct memory Access or other devices you need to attack to the PCIe bus. These happen to include Audio accelerators, Hardware encoders, FGPAs, External video solutions, displays, and other co-processors.

Yes USB3 can do many things but DMA, low latency it does not have and never will.


They know their target

Only an Apple user would pay for something like this. Even if thunderbolt ports were available for PC.

yeah but if it really did have arcs of lightning flowing around it when in use like in the pic above.. I'd buy one just for the look of it..else.. not so much
