New Velociraptors start at $299

It's been nearly two years since the debut of the 300GB Western Digital Velociraptor. Since that time, SSDs have continued to lower in price and have become the "go to" storage device for hardcore gamers.

We first brought you info on the new Velociraptors back in January, but today Western Digital is finally ready to spill the beans on the new Velociraptor VR200M series. The new drives boast a 10,000 rpm spindle speed and can be had in 450GB and 600GB capacities.

The drives feature a 2.5" form-factor (albeit with a 15 mm height, so don't even think about trying to fit this into an average notebook computer). Most drives, however, will come with the IcePAK heatsink which allows the Velociraptors to fit into a 3.5" drive bay.

As with most new HDDs and SSDs announced today, the new Velociraptor VR200M series support the SATA 6Gb/sec standard. The new drives also feature a 32MB cache and a 200GB/platter.

"WD is a leader in the performance and reliability of enterprise SATA hard drives," said Western Digital's Tom McDorman. "Demand for performance combined with an increase in capacity continues to rise and WD is the leader in this category. WD customers can rely on the new WD VelociRaptor to deliver high performance under the harshest conditions, while continuing to keep user data safe."

The 450 and 600GB Velociraptors have an MSRP of $299 and $329 respectively -- the drives also come with a five-year warranty.

Anand Shimpi has already reviewed the new Velociraptors and argues that while these are blazing fast hard drives, a large 7,200 rpm HDD plus an SSD boot drive would probably be the faster solution for most people.

Agree with above, but in addition

Caviar Black 2Terabyte is $280. It's almost as fast as the 300GB Velociraptor....

so 2000GB almost as fast as a 600GB and $40 cheaper...

look at the review at Tomshardware

Not sure if it was Tomshardware or MaximumPC, but the review is out there

I agree. There doesn't seem to be much point to the Velociraptor drives anymore. SSD boot and program + platter for data is the way to go now.

Who reads Tom's Hardware these days? I am surprised that the website still exists...

People who want a 4 page read spread out over 30 pages for ad content?

Tom's was a good sight I used regularly until, as you guys said it, ads littered every single page. If you have adblock your list will be crammed with junk ads, links, and the like. Truly pathetic now, but I guess one has to make money somehow.

Maybe you don't know the meaning of the word. If it exists then it is not extinct.

These drives are too expensive.. especially the 450gb. But SSD's are even worse. However, when you've got over 300gb in applications and games (installed) a measly 128gb SSD at the same price ain't gonna cut it.

This is really my issue too, I WANT a fast SSD system drive, but my requirements for my system drive are in the 300-500gb range (I just have a lot of really large programs I keep installed, and don't want to compromise) and getting an SSD that large is just prohibitively expensive currently.

What I really want is to Raid-0 a couple of reasonable sized SSD's together, and I think Anand recently did a review on the new small Intel's drives where he said its pretty fast in most cases... but the big caveat to Raiding SSD's is the TRIM commands don't work. (you can pass trim to a standalone SSD connected to a RAID controller with newer firmware, but not if its an actual member disk in an array)

So for my money, I'm waiting till they have a decent RAID controller (or firmware update) that can properly pass TRIM to RAID arrays, and will then just buy 2 or 3 of the cheapest decent SSD's available at the time and go to town in RAID-0 :)

Does EVERY application need the speed of a SSD? If not then install it on a HDD instead. I would only install the OS and any applications that you NEED the speed improvement with.

If those prices are accurate

Then they don't make sense.

Why sell a 450GB drive at $300 when the 600GB is $330? There's no reason to buy the 450GB, even when you factor in the slightly lower power consumption and heat.

The actual retail price will be more sensible.

Great, another wonderfully fast piece of hardware thrown at the problem. NOTHING will speed up Microsoft's worthless file handling systems.

Bro, dump the 486 rig. Win XP and Win 7 are fine operating systems. If your old computer with 128k of memory idsnt enough, perhaps its best if you forgo computer ownership completely.

After reading the review on the new drives on the anandtech site, I went to click on his BENCH link at the top of the header page. Wanted to pull up some CPU benchmarks, all I get is an error when trying to run a gaming bench.
