New cutouts and decals and a few Wal-Mart stores have confirmed rumors that the iPhone is on its way to the store.  (Source: Apple Insider)
Looks like the iPhone is indeed coming to Walmart

With Walmart's former digital video head now working as Apple's head of international movies and TV, the companies enjoy a rather friendly relationship.  This relationship and supposed leaks fueled speculation that the pair was going to launch a $99 USD 4GB iPhone for sale at Wal-Mart stores.

Now it appears that rumors of the iPhone coming to Wal-Mart have been confirmed -- whether intentionally or unintentionally.

Walmart shoppers this month began to notice something strange.  Some Walmart store owners have already put up the decals and cardboard standups for a new ad campaign advertising the iPhone at Apple.  The ads state simply, "iPhone 3G: Now at Walmart".

According to prior reports the handsets will go on sale at 9:00 A.M. on Sunday, December 28th.

While the appearance of advertising materials has as much as confirmed the fact that the phones are coming, it does little to establish if the rumors of the $99 USD limited edition Walmart-exclusive 4 GB iPhone are true.  If they are, it would mark the cheapest price for the iPhone yet.  However, AppleInsider, which broke much of the story, is now saying that it believes these rumors to be false.

It says that instead Apple will sell the 8GB and 16GB 3G models, for $197 USD and $297 USD respectively.  According to reports 488 Walmart stores were selected as pilot stores for the program to test that all the systems were working before a full deployment.  It's unclear whether the stores putting up the advertising information were the pilot stores, but this would seem a logical conclusion.

Each Walmart store, according to reports, must sell five iPhones to its employees.  The iPhones will be sold at full price.  However, the employees will receive a 15 percent discount off their AT&T monthly bill.

Who would be willing to purchase the phone for full price and only receive 15% off of service per month in exchange? How can Walmart make their employees purchase something?

My personal VZW bill gets 19% off as it's tied into my company/state VZW contract, but even still the bill is high.

Anyone wanting 15% off their contract? Have a nice time trying to get anything off on a non business(and I mean corp contracts) iPhone contract, if you don't like it, they basically tell you to go elsewhere.

I don't even think there is a company that offers a corporate discount on the iphone. I gleefully get to here my cohorts gripe on how that specific phone is not eligible. At which point I rub it in on how they could have 30% knocked off monthly with a touch pro.

15% off the AT&T bill is almost $10 a month. Over a 2 year contact that would total $240. I think that's a pretty good deal, and it's even better if you actually keep the phone longer than 2 years.

So much for being exclusive. Now every joe jimbob and fat redneck skanky redneck women that lives in BFE and knows nothing about nice phones or internet/movies/music everything the Iphone does very well, will have one or be able to get one at $99. Thanks apple now I have to find another phone thats unattainable by the most of the masses to be cool again.

Contracts

I reside in Germany, and I guess $197 and $297 respectively are typical, but I paid only 40 Euro out of pocket for my 16G. I still think contract discount is the ticket for these gems. How else would you have unlimited bandwidth?

No complaints from me

I'm all for this. WalMart can help drive the price down, even if it means an iPhone with less storage space. Apple taking market share away from Window Mobile and Blackberry phones means more competition and lower prices for consumers.

Wal-Mart store owners

Let me assure you that Wal-Mart is the store owner. The store manager would be the one responsible for the timing of the rollout of the display materials under direction from Bentonville.

Doesn't this bit of info belong in the realm of engadget and gizmodo?
