Western Digital announces new 160GB notebook drive, Passport storage device

Western Digital finally joins Seagate and Hitachi in offering 5400RPM, 160GB hard drives for notebook computers. Western Digital's new 160GB Scorpio SATA hard drive employs perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) to achieve its capacity and features a 5400 RPM spindle speed.

The 2.5” drives will also be available in Western Digital’s newly revamped Passport Portable Drives. The USB 2.0-based Passport series drives are now available in 60GB, 80GB, 120GB and 160GB varieties. Western Digital also went to work by trimming the physical dimensions and weight of the storage devices. The drives now feature a piano-black finish with a soft-touch base and weigh in at less than five ounces.

Western Digital's new Scorpio 160GB notebook hard drive is available for $179 while the 160GB Passport Portable Drive will retail for $199.
