The Volt will lease for $350 per month

GM has been teasing with talk of its extended range electric vehicle the Volt since 2007. The car was originally expected to hit the market years ago, but delays meant that the car has only this week finally been granted a sticker price.

Unfortunately, the sticker price for the Volt is as high as many premium vehicles for a car that lacks the style the original concept had. Chevrolet will sell the Volt for $41,000 and the car will be eligible for the $7,500 tax rebate for hybrid and electric vehicles. Analysts are saying that the high purchase price of the vehicle and the relatively low lease rate for the Volt will virtually guarantee that most of the Volt cars will be leased and not purchased outright.

The lease rate on the Volt will be appealing to many buyers interested in the car. The Volt will lease for $350 per month for three years with a down payment of $2500. When the federal tax rebate is figured into the price of the car, the MSRP comes down to $33,500. It is important to point out that the Volt's $41,000 price tag is before any incentives or manufacturer rebates.

Analyst Jessica Caldwell from Edmunds said, "If GM had launched the Volt when they started teasing us years ago, it could have successfully commanded a hefty price tag." As it stands today, there are several other hybrid and electric vehicles on the market such as the Honda Leaf that  might woo potential Volt buyers to other brands.
