Volkswagen unveils two new "green" vehicles

When we think of fuel efficient Volkswagens, diesel engines immediately spring to mind. The German automaker does offer a hybrid version of the Touareg here in the United States, but that vehicle is admittedly going after a niche market.
 
Volkswagen, however, is going after the heart of the hybrid market in the U.S. with the new Jetta Hybrid that will complement the existing Jetta TDI. The Jetta Hybrid makes uses of a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 150hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. The gasoline engine is paired with a 27 kWh electric motor, lithium-ion battery pack, and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission ("DSG" in VW-speak). Total system output is a respectable 170hp.


Jetta Hybrid
 
With its new internals, the Jetta Hybrid is capable of sauntering to 60mph in less than nine seconds, can travel up to 1.2 miles on battery power alone, and can accelerate up to 44mph on battery power. Estimated combined fuel economy for the Jetta Hybrid is 45mpg.
 
Volkswagen also announced a new all-electric concept version of the redesigned Beetle. The E-Bugster features a 695-pound lithium-ion battery pack, which powers an 114hp (199 lb-ft) electric motor. The E-Bugster has a driving range of around 100 miles.

Was that how a vehicle could be 150hp and only do 0-60 in about 9 seconds and then I realized, it's because it's a fuckin heavy vehicle!

Does everything on the road need to go 0-60 is under 3 seconds?

All I care is they dont left lane hug, use turn signals, go when the light turns green, dont apply thier makeup, dont text, and use a hands free phone device.

Maybe it does Im just getting old. The day I leave my turn signal on for 7 miles Ill look into retirement and mass transit.

Sorry, but I have to agree with this.

Now, I love the fact that the Mustang and the Charger and the Camero are in a war to see who makes the fastest, badest car. And being able to go 0-60 under 5 seconds and get 30 mpg is great.

But I, and a lot of others can't afford those cars. And with all the cars on the road you can't hardly open them up before you have to slow down.

If drivers used HALF the power their cars have we'd have a better moving wave to and from work! Hell my under powered car can move onto the freeway and merge and pass better than most vehicles on the road. Why? Because it's all about the driver not the HPs you have under the hood!

And yes, I do think I can drive better than most others on the road!

It's respectable for a compact economy car, the Jetta is nearly mid-size now so the weight is a factor but it's pretty decent and definitely not dangerously slow.

It's just not a car for enthusiasts, at least not driving enthusiasts.

Yep and if I were in the market for a car like this, I wouldn't care if it was fast. There are other cars for that purpose.

If you wanted a bit faster with good fuel efficiency, the Diesel option is there. It does 0-60 around 8 seconds. Seems like VW just wanted to address a hole they had in their lineup. Diesels are great for people who frequently make longer trips, or have at least an 8 or so mile commute. However, for frequent short trips, the Diesels are bad because the exhaust doesn't get hot enough to clear it out. That's where the Hybrid shines.

Unless these two vehicles cost less to buy and operate than a VW Diesel, I don't see any value in them except for the tree huggers. So far Volt and other hybrid car sales have missed their 2011 sales projections and I believe that says a lot about the potential of these vehicles.

Hybrid drive trains are better for city, stop/go and short trips. If you have around an 8 mile commute or more, reach highway speeds and don't do much stop/go, then Diesel for sure.
