Vista's new packaging
Just one more image for your consumption

Earlier this week, Microsoft revealed the images of the packaging for Windows Vista and Office 2007. The DVDs are encased in sturdy plastic and are designed for durability and longevity.

Today, Neowin was able to grab hold of one more picture of what looks to be final-spec Vista packaging complete with retracting disc holder. Also on display are the holographic DVD discs that are now being used for Windows and Office.

It's not like they're compensating for anything, are they?

I'm glad that, for $400, I get the absolute best box money can buy.

Seriously, who are they kidding? Flashy names, flashy graphics, flashy box - a whited sepulchre masking a carcass gutted of features.

Well one of the biggest knocks from the Mac guys is always, that our operating system is ugly, and our packaging is boring.

Yeah, the appearance update is nice, I don't think even Apple has anything so snazzy.

There is also the security stand point. Microsoft uses holographic disks not for the pretty picture, but so you can't make counterfeits that look exactly the same. The box will help with that since John Doe down at PC Boxes R US will not be able to print up a box and stick his counterfeit DVDs inside.

It's called "marketing." So, you expect that, because they didn't ship all the features they originally wanted to, the product should have a crappy looking box? What kind of logic is that?

Anyway, most of the features that didn't make the release are going to ship later in service packs and updates. This is just like WinXP and Win2003 that got lots of features added after the initial release, none of which cost any additional money.

Agreed. thats why the box looks so damn good. its Void of most of the orginally promised features.

In all seriousness. Even i am debating buying Vista dispite that they removed alot of features that i thought were really cool.

And it's all meticulously calculated! When using Vista Ultimate as a base:

Disc packaging = $380
Packaging cover = $5
Packaging inserts = $5
Vista disc itself = $0.50
Manual = $4.50

But ... then again and logically speaking... it doesn't exactly come out the same when we look at Vista Home Basic :o Oh well!

I think it looks nice overall, complements to the designer, but does anyone else find the tagline funny?

I feel like "The Most Complete Version of Windows" implies that it's not complete and that all the other versions are even less so. lol. Maybe if they said something like "The Most Advanced Version" it would be better.
