Upgrading the infrastructure will increase peak theoretical bandwidth
Verizon Wireless features the EV-DO broadband over
wireless network which allows high bandwidth data connectivity to be
achieved on mobile devices using Verizon's WLAN PC cards for laptops. Recently announced, Verizon will be upgrading its wireless network infrastructure to EV-DO Revision A
which will boost the upload speeds to 1.8Mbit/sec and download speeds
from 2.46Mbit/sec from Revision 0 to 3.1Mbit/sec. Those values are of
course peaks, so those with Verizon's WLAN plans may or may not see
data transfer rates as quick as the theoretical values. Nortel
Networks, Verizon's supplier of hardware, will aid in the upgrades as
they have successfully finished testing. Other cellular
providers also offer WLAN services on the EV-DO network such as
nationwide Sprint and other carriers that offer regional services.
Competing standards to EV-DO include HSDPA which builds on the W-CDMA
standard. Providers of HSDPA include USA's Cingular and T-Mobile which
is a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom.
