Droid Bionic by Motorola   (Source:
Droid Bionic is available exclusively to Verizon customers starting today

Last month, market research firm Canalys announced that Android-powered phones outsold Apple's iPhone 5-to-2, and that Android has nearly 50 percent of the market. Now, a new, highly anticipated member of the Android family has arrived: Motorola's Droid Bionic.

Verizon Wireless and Motorola Mobility, Inc. announced that the Droid Bionic will be exclusively available to Verizon customers starting today. It will combine 4G LTE with dual-core 1 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM and will be powered by Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread.

Using Verizon's 4G LTE network, customers can expect download speeds of 5 to 12 Mbps and upload speeds of 2 to 5 Mbps.

Droid Bionic also offers a slew of other features, such as a 4.3-inch qHD screen with scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass and a dual-layer anti-reflective coating; an 8-megapixel autofocus camera with flash and 1080p HD video capture; a front-facing camera for video chat over 3G, 4G LTE or W-Fi, and 32 GB memory (16 GB on board and 16 GB microSD card pre-installed) as well as support for up to 32 GB microSD cards.

As far as applications go, Droid Bionic will introduce ZumoCast by Motorola, which allows customers to transfer their digital photos, videos, music and documents from their computers to their handset through remote access. With its Webtop application, Droid Bionic can also send Firefox 4.0, email or documents to a TV or monitor. In addition, the MOTOPRINT app will allow users to print photos or documents through Wi-Fi-enabled printers.

Other added features include pre-loaded Adobe Flash; HTML5 capabilities; Mirror Mode with HDMI out supporting 1080p HD video playback; a wireless charger, and business-related features such as advanced security policies, calendar/task widgets, device/SD card encryption and Citrix GotoMeeting/Citrix Receiver for Android.

Verizon is also selling accessories for the Droid Bionic, such as the HD Station for $99.99, which allows customers to use the smartphone as an "entertainment center or home office." HDMI cables will be available for options like Mirror Mode, a lapdock netbook adapter for $299.97, a $29.99 adapter for the Webtop application, a battery dock with an extra battery for $49.99, which may indicate that the dual-core processor and 4G network is a battery drainer, and much more.

The Droid Bionic by Motorola is available in Verizon stores starting today for $299.99 with a new two-year contract.

Apple where are you

Well it looks like this is part of the reason apple is trying to shut everyone down with frivolous patent lawsuits, can't compete once the competition catches up. Their is no way in hell apple will drop their prices. The only way to bring new customers in and keep their prices high is to put two apple logos on their products, for the esthetic look. The logos that separate the different culture groups. The ultimate statement of the whats in it for the Me Generation.
Have to admit the iphone is a work of art and when a 4 comes along, i will buy it if its not over priced.

And I just saw on Slickdeals that you can get the Bionic for $160 after coupon right now

Tough competition indeed. But then again, I don't look at the initial outlay for the phone; I look at the monthly bill.

I already have a droid and dont want an iPhone. But I do have a second line that needs to be upgraded to a smart phone. I wish Verizon would release some more Windows 7 phones. They have a whopping 1 in their phone portfolio and it has the same hardware specs as droid phones from 18 months ago. Win7 phone OS may not be perfect, but it is actually pretty good, and that coupled with an android phone would give me good flexibility.

Yeah I'm interested in WP7 but they need a flagship. The Trophy is good but it isn't great.

Now all Motorola needs is someone to show up at the iPhone 5 unveiling, who will (as Apple points out each "new" feature) snicker loudly, hold up their Bionic, and say, "Mine's better!"

Of course, the fanboys still won't get it!

I hereby remove Scarlett Johansson from your mental image and replace her with Jon Voight doing so with a deep rumbling 'mmmmmmmmmm' and nipples with gray hair.

I wonder if you can delete the stock apps...
By tayb on 9/8/2011 9:14:57 PM , Rating: 2
Because I can't delete the stock apps on my Droid X. I had to root it to get rid of stock applications that I didn't want.

I found myself doing something similar when I owned an iPhone, except that it was called jailbreaking.

I hate my Droid X just slightly less than I hated my iPhone 3G. My next phone OS will be WP7. Give everyone a fair shot.

Yeah, the Verizon Bloatware is BS. I have a Droid3 and had to suffer with the bloatware until just last week when someone much smarter than myself figured out how to root the device. It is insane how I can uninstall every piece of bloatware on a Windows 7 HP, but not on an Android phone. WTF Google? And yes, if I didn't love playing in the woods while still having cell service, I may have gone with Sprint.

Yup, first thing to do with any android phone is to root and load custom ROM. By the way, custom ROMs are the best feature of android.

I don't thing you can run custom versions on WP7 can you? Is it possible to strip out all the cell providers software?

Where's the case in point? How will the iPhone 5 specs compare to the Bionic? The iPhone 5 isn't even going to be an LTE phone, and all the specs I've seen show the iPhone to be well below the Bionic. So if the iPhone 5 is a lesser phone yet costs the same.......

As for the accessories, are you saying that you wouldn't be at, or over $780 for the iPhone if you bought all the same accessories from Apple?

Verizon extortion
By bill4 on 9/9/2011 4:10:45 PM , Rating: 2
299 on contract for this very average piece of crap can only be Verizon. There isn't a phone on AT&T that costs more than 199, most of them far less, usually $99.

The only thing that scares me is with the help of the media Verizon gets away with these prices, so one of these days ATT may copy.
