Come and get your love!

Verizon issued a press release today stating that it has fully completed its acquisition of wireless carrier Alltel. The merger between then No. 2 Verizon and No. 5 Alltel was first announced in early June, 2008.

The acquisition of Alltel will give Verizon an additional 12.9 million customers which will boost its total haul to 83.7 million customers. As a result, Verizon will now be the No. 1 wireless carrier in the United States vaulting past AT&T.

According to the terms of the acquisition, Alltel customers will not notice any interruption in their service or customer support for the new 2-3 months. Customers, however, will receive letters in the mail within the coming weeks detailing the transition. During the transition period, Alltel customer calling plans and features such as My Circle will go on untouched.

However, once the integration of Verizon and Alltel's billing and service plans is completed, the future of My Circle is a bit uncertain. Alltel states the following on its site about My Circle:

My Circle will continue to be available to Alltel customers while they are on an Alltel price plan. At this time, Verizon Wireless is evaluating whether a similar plan will be offered to new and existing Verizon Wireless customers.

Verizon’s acquisition of Alltel is valued at over $28 billion USD.

I guess we won't seeing the verizon guy on those Alltel commercials now.

If you haven't noticed, in the Alltel commercials (which are pretty popular where I live in Ohio), the verizon guy (or toon, depending) is either in the WAY back, or is wearing something to disguise his identity (there's a "new years" alltel comericial now in a claymation-type where the red guy is in the way back, and I can't read his name tag (so its either tmobile or verizon) and another guy is wearing a sweater. you ask me, alltel already has backed down from talking about verizon.)

Verizon: Hey, guys. I found a solution to our little problem. You can thank me later.
AT&T, Sprint and T-mobile: What did you do?
*Chad walks in wearing glasses and Verizon shirt.*
Chad: Can you hear me now?

For some reason when I read the beginning line of your post I immediately thought of a Brokeback Mountain spoof between Chad and The Verizon Guy.

Verzion: Hey guys! Alltel won't be a problem for us anymore.
AT&T, Sprint, and T-Moble: What did you do to solve the problem!?
::Chad walks in with Brokeback Mountain music playing::
Verzion: Hey Chad... can you hear me now?

Apple came to Verizon first with the iPhone. They couldn't agree on the terms of carrying the phone, so Apple went to AT&T. The rest as they say, is history.

I can't believe I'm about to say this but, "It's not Apple's fault."

Ok, that's it... I'm going to go take a rape shower now.

Make sure you crank your hot water tank up. First-degree burns are the only way to truly cleanse such a statement...

True but if Apple wasnt so greedy and like everything they make they want to tell people what to do with their products no wonder it didnt workout between them, BUT verizon is no different, they tend to turn off key phone features so people are forced to buy their crappy music selection, or be forced to use their crappy OS

maybe verizon wanted to get a piece of the apple store and apple didnt like that idea, who knows what the real reasons are.

THE REAL REASON IS THAT APPLE WANTED IN ON MUSIC $$ PROFITS FROM VZW SONGS. IT WAS NOT WORTH IT TO VZW SO THEY DECLINED THE IPHONE OFFER. it has not really effected vzw as a whole more so for the industry. The iPhone set the standard for "touch" phones that are media capable. Any touch device from here on out can only get better by enhancing the touch experience and adding more user friendly applications.

But....

Can we PLEASE get some decent phones now. I like Alltel but it seems like we have been getting the shaft on new phones, im really hoping we can use some of the phones that Verizon customers get.

I'm with you on that. I've been with Alltel for the past 8 or 9 years and that has been my only complaint.

But, I will admit I've enjoyed the Rokr Z6m I got last year. The mp3 player added together with the S9 headset using the stereo bluetooth connection is great for the gym.

Makes sense

Soaking up another CDMA based provider makes this as seamless as any acquisition can be.

The combined Alltel/VZW footprint (even after some markets are divested as per FCC guidelines) will provide the best coverage in the country.

We need more competition, not less. Alltel was the last great cell company we had. They had great prices with great service with non-crippled phones. Strike two of those off with the Verizon merger. I wish Congress or the FCC or somebody would break up these companies, like Ma Bell was broken up in the past. Break up Verizon. Break up AT&T. Sad day. Less competition is not a good thing.

To accept this merger, the FCC told Verizon that they had to allow 100% access to their network on unlocked phones, which they completed in August.

Everyone's prices are about the same. The hegemony running the wireless in this country are almost done with the consolidation in to 3-4 majors, just like the land line companies did prior to 2000. Good luck trying to move Everest.

Taking bets on when the Alltel guy is found out to be a pot head like the once famous Dell Dude from years ago.

50%.

The first one should be "then" as the article clearly indicates that after the merger Verizon is the No. 1 carrier. Thus, before the merger (ie, "then") Verizon was No. 2.

One Verizon customer to another is free 24/7, I guess once the transition is complete, there is no change other than access to more people in the IN-Network since it will include the Alltel people.
