VeriSign says it has the proven experience to secure WiMAX

The WiMAX Forum and VeriSign Inc. today announced an agreement for VeriSign to become the official company to provide security for the upcoming WiMAX (802.16) wireless standard. Long known for providing trusted Internet security for online e-commerce websites, VeriSign president says his company believes that it has "proven experience creating interoperable trust models, and demonstrated a deep understanding of the WiMAX requirements, giving us the confidence that they are the best choice to secure the millions of WiMAX devices that will be deployed."

VeriSign will develop security methods that will govern how WiMAX devices transmit data and communicate with each other. The company considers WiMAX as a "disruptive" standard, and says that applications such as voice, data and video services traveling the airwaves using WiMAX will be secured by VeriSign technology. From the press release:

VeriSign will operate the WiMAX root CA used to create a single, trusted device authentication standard for WiMAX networks. The VeriSign Custom Device Certificate Service (CDCS) allows embedding X.509-standard digital certificates into all WiMAX Forum Certified hardware devices based on IEEE 802.16-2004 and ETSI HiperMAN 1.2.1 standards.

The WiMAX standard itself is receiving a huge push by many industry backers. Intel recently announced that it will be introducing a version of WiMAX that will have "router-like" capabilities for mobile uses. Set to be introduced in its Rosedale 2 wi-fi chip, mobile WiMAX (802.16e) will allow users to share a single WiMAX transmission similar to the way home routers allow many PCs to share a single Internet connection. VeriSign says all companies adopting the WiMAX standard will be developing secure devices based on its "robust PKI trust services."
