It's the 1990s and virtual reality all over again

Valve Corp., the famous game maker who brought the world the popular franchises Half LifeCounterStrikePortalTeam Fortress, and Left 4 Dead, made waves last week when it posted a job listing seeking hardware developers to help it design first-party hardware.  That led to fervent speculation -- was Valve designing a gaming console?  Was it making a "brain controller"?

I. Valve, the Hyper-Google

new report in The New York Times may answer some of those questions, as well as provide a bit of insight into Valve.

Founded by ex-Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) employees, Valve has no bosses, despite being incorporated.  The company's employee manual, obtained by The New York Times reads, "We don’t have any management, and nobody ‘reports to’ anybody else."

Valve's free-form atmosphere puts even Google Inc.'s (GOOG) policy of giving employees 20 percent of their time to work on pet projects to shame.  At Valve employees make their own way (supposedly) 100 percent of the time.  The NYT describes:

New employees aren’t even told where to work in the company. Instead, they are expected to decide on their own where they can contribute most. Many desks at Valve are on wheels. After figuring out what they want to do, workers simply push their desks over to the group they want to join.

The Seattle-area company zealously retains its employees.  Gabe Newell -- who The NYT says is "CEO" of the company, but only by empty formality -- comments, "I get freaked out any time one person leaves.  It seems like a bug in the system."

II. Building Gaming Goggles

The report says that Valve has hired Jeri Ellsworth, a self-taught inventor and chip designer, whose early work includes circuits for pinball machines that Valve has in its headquarters’ lobby.  To make her prototypes at Valve Ms. Ellsworth employs 3D printers, laser cutters, and other bleeding edge modular manufacturing tools.  Comments Ms. Ellsworth, "At one point, I said a hardware lab could be very expensive, it could be like a million dollars.  Gabe [Newell] said, 'That's it?'"

Ms. Ellsworth is working on a team led by Michael Abrash -- a former id Software veteran -- to produce augmented reality goggles, somewhat similar to the Android-powered "Google Goggles" (officially dubbed "Glass Explorers").  Wearing the Valve goggles, gamers will be transported into the world of the game.

Valve is reportedly still ironing out how it wants to produce the designs -- but it already has working prototypes.  According to Mr. Abrash, the goggles will likely first be employed in virtual reality gaming (where the entire scene is animated), then 3 to 5 years down the road will be upgraded to support augmented reality gaming (where game world objects are overlayed on real world settings).

There are both technical and social hurdles to the augmented reality gaming vision.  For one thing, someone walking down the street playing Half Life might be a bit dangerous.  And then there're technical challenges, like how to popular "glue" faux billboards onto real world buildings to enhance the fantasy.

Thus far all attempts to produce a virtual or augment reality console have failed for the most part.  While some smartphone apps are now offering mild augmented reality, perhaps the most ambitious virtual or augment reality device was Nintendo Comp., Ltd.'s (TYO:7904) ill-fated "Virtual Boy", which TopTenz lists as the "#1 video game console flop of all time".

III. Valve is Drifting Apart From Microsoft

Gabe Newell, in his interview preached radical anti-authoritarianism, saying he would rather dissolve the company than sell it.  The report claims that Electronics Arts Inc. (EA) was keen to purchase Valve years ago for $1B USD.  Valve rebuffed the offers, and according to the report is today worth $2.5B USD.

But Valve has some big concerns ahead.  Its ubiquitous "Steam" digital distribution service is facing hurdles in Windows 8 -- the biggest of which is Microsoft's decision to offer access to many operating system features only to apps purchased through Windows Store.  That means apps distributed by services like Steam may be effectively crippled, potentially killing such third-party services.

Valve has grown increasingly critical of Microsoft, and says its games play faster in Linux than Windows.

Gabe Newell strongly resents this approach from his former employer of 13 years (Mr. Newell was among the "Microsoft Millionaires" of the 1990s).  In a comment to The NYT he stated, "We would say to Microsoft, we understand all these frustrations about the challenges to your business, but trying to copy Apple will accelerate, not slow, Microsoft’s decline.'"

(But don't worry Windows fans -- despite Valve selling games for Macs, it's also been a harsh critic of Apple, Inc.'s (AAPL) similar "walled garden" iOS methodology.)

Incidentally one thing not mentioned in the piece was what operating system the wearable goggles use.  Given Valve's anti-Microsoft sentiments of late, it seems likely they're built on Linux.  That hypothesis would make sense as Valve recently ported its source codes to also use the open graphics interface OpenGL, instead of just Microsoft's proprietary PC graphics API DirectX.  The port allows Valve's software to run on Linux and Apple Mac computers.  Valve claims that Left 4 Dead 2 is running faster on Ubuntu 12.04 Linux (OpenGL 4.3) than on Windows 7 SP1 (DirectX 11).

Microsoft is also reportedly considering augmented reality goggles for use with its upcoming Xbox 720 console.

In this modern era, storytelling and gameplay > engine used. Portal2 used a recent Source engine, looked fine to me. What does "MS-DOS ugly cubical games" look like? I'm thinking the original 1992-or-so Wolfenstein 3D, but not sure what you mean, or what that has to do with the Source engine.

Bleh I still play oldschool games. In the past year I've played through System Shock 1 and 2 and halfway through Worlds of Xeen (beat Clouds, now on Darkside). In addition, I've futzed around in many others.

It's not about the graphics, it is about the gameplay. I'll take a fun game any day over shiny, corridor shooter filled graphics.

Every now and then I break out the Thief series...

I appreciate Valve diversifying to stay on top. They need to keep that up and still support the Win PC and Mac as long as possible. Maybe one day we'll own Linux gaming PCs. Who knows.

If I was unable to download and run my game in Windows, I would gladly dual-boot into Linux to game.

Why bother about mediocre last decade's crap tech like Source when Crysis 3 with the cream of the crop best engine in the industry is near?

Because the Crysis games have been dull, uninteresting, uninspired, and so generic they make Oblivion look completely fresh in comparison. I'm a gamer, not a coder, and I'm not impressed by fancy-sounding game engine features.

Exactly, and thank you. I have never been so initially impressed by graphics and then later completely bored by the actual games on my life than Far Cry, Crysis and Crysis 2. Yawnfest and they just dont feel right during heavy combat.

I remember one level in Crysis where you have to shoot down a series of helicopters, and it was just a raging pain to actually hunt down all the rocket launchers on the map to accomplish. I compare this to the original Half-Life and its duel with a chopper on the cliff side, a vastly superior experience.... even without fancy shaders, a trazillion polygons, and neat texture tricks.

I've enjoyed Crysis a lot and the AI on Crysis is much better than on HL, the environments on Crysis are also much more "realist".
L4D is load of fun but it's not a single player game.

If HL3 was to be worked on and released it would be on a current engine or redesigned Source to be current. FFS, Eyye candy aside the folks at Crytech can seriously learn from Valve on how to make a game A) FUN, and B) responsive, because Half life and HL2 was both and Crysis engine games are neither.

Source is a pretty good engine, especially when you consider its nearly 8 years old. It has added a number of more modern features since its launch, and runs extremely well on older machines.

Its limitations lie in the difficulty in creating games vs something like Unreal, which has much better authoring tools.

Nah, with Newell's ass so much stuck now into Linux and OpenGL there's no hope left in their engine tech, it'll be some lousy looking OpenGL shit similar to whatever id produces now, i.e. nothing special. Crytek's bleeding edge PC/DirectX only stuff (I'm not talking console port of it, this is different story) won't be even remotely comparable with this "open source" shite, since Crytek never fucks with "open source" and "portability", things that leet PC gamers don't give a fuyck about. Crytek always pay attention only to the best looking 3D tech on the leet gaming 3Dhardware from nVidia, which is impossible by definition on open source shite like Linux and OpenGL.

So I'm pretty skeptical about it. Newell seems to have chosen inferior Linux and console crap like OpenGL, once I heard about it I realized it's time to say farewell to dreams of seeing HL franchise on top again, like it was a long time ago when HL1 was just released.

Good luck to Newell milking console mediocrity and Linux cheapskates who have no idea what the leet 3D gaming and pushing the boundaries is. I support companies who pay attention to leet first and THEN port their stuff to MS consoles, letting dumber people with cheapo consoles enjoy 1/2 of the game we leet PC people did already. And this means Crytek, not Valve.

Its a shame that Crytek's games are so boring. Crysis is overrated and Crysis 2 was garbage (Warhead was actually decent, being short was a plus).

Nothing they've done comes close to what Valve has done with the Half Life or Portal series.

Who cares about FPS these days anyway, its a tired genre made for people who like easy games. Big ups to Valve for still having foresight and putting so much weight behind DOTA 2, a game that is truly deep, fun, and always challenging.

Crytek uses no lead platform or so they say, they cross platform.

In January 2010 PC Games Hardware visited Crytek in Frankfurt, Germany. This gave us the chance to ask Cevat Yerli, founder of Crytek, technical questions about the Cryengine 3. From the interview we learned that although the Cryengine 3 is a multi-platform technology, there is no lead platform which is usually the case.

Source uses Direct3D rendering on Microsoft Windows PCs, Xbox and Xbox 360, OpenGL rendering on Mac OS X and the PlayStation 3.

Seems to me that not all consoles use OpenGL and Source is very capable of utilizing Direct3D, it's not used on Mac and Playstation, I would imagine, because they would have to licence the tech to use it and OpenGL is free. Whatever the reason I am not sure but to say "console crap like OpenGL" is dicto simpliciter.

Also for you to say "I support companies who pay attention to leet first and THEN port their stuff to MS consoles" is a contradiction in and of itself. All Halflife games were created for the PC and ported to console later and for that matter Crytek claims to crossplatform with no "lead" platform at all which also leads your comment to contradiction because Crytek favors no "leet" platform.

I knew you were stupid due to the things you post regarding crApple but this cements it. Yeah gotta love Hypsis, I mean Crysis. Especially rendered in DX11 with that shitty patch they released in a make-shift attempt to implement DX11 features. I REALLY love how running it in DX11 mode renders all the UNDERGROUND water that isn't even supposed to exsist. Fire up the game and put it into debug mode and see what I am talking about.

It is great taking a BIG performance hit for something that is half-assed and not even supposed to be in the level. Hurry up and fall back to Hypsis 1 and how it brought so many machines to their knees. That is only because it was a HUGE unoptimized piece of crap as well. They did alot better job with Warhead though.

The first Crysis was a benchmark utility first, and game second, and even then it was not so great.

The second was complete ass and people complained if it being a console port.

Without OpenGL.. you wouldn't have games on PS3, linux, and -- your precious iOS and OSX. You wouldn't even have all those nifty hw-accelerated interface effects and transitions that made iOS and OSX seem so fluid and responsive. Sure, OpenGL suffered greatly from lack of interest in the early 00's due to MS's brutal strategy of locking down support and licensing when dealing with DX, but interest has surged in it again, something any could certainly attribute to Apple's gained success this past decade. And btw.. Crytek supports OpenGL rendering -- otherwise you would have no Crysis on PS3.

Your staunch opinion on this is a hell of a lot more confusing than your usual tirades. Fact is, without OpenGL you wouldn't have any sort of hw-accelerated gaming (or any 3d effects, ftm) outside of Windows desktops, xbox360, or any other company who licenses DX tech from Microsoft -- a company which you seem to hate with no reservations.

A most confusing opinion.. are you saying you game on Microsoft hard-/soft-ware..?

I understand where you're coming from, but there needs to be a genuine competitor to DirectX. OpenGL is it and it needs active development and supporters in order to grow and keep up with DX.

It also offers Valve a way of sticking it to "the man" by having alternatives. I commend them.

Sure, Source hasn't been keeping up pace with newer engines.. though given that it's still being used in many newer games with great graphical success, I doubt it's a huge issue (as the engine is constantly expanded upon, and something new is certainly in the pipes anyways). Moreover, as an Apple fanboy, you should be lauding Valve's efforts to bring the Source engine to Mac years ago, finally bringing real gaming back to Apple.. it may not be perfect, but it's better than nothing. And I somehow doubt you are a gamer anyways..

And by mentioning Crysis 3, do you mean the one being developed on CryEngine 3 -- which is currently in use in Crysis 2 and many other games, having been around for 2 years (and over 1 year in retail games)..? So how near can an engine that's been around for years be..? xD

Can't help but just feel like you had the need to troll.. without any real knowledge or functional opinion of the issue (at least with little mention of any Apple products to defend).

which is very inaccurate. Windows 7 SP! does INCLUDE DirectX11, but this does not mean the API is used in the game. Source uses DirectX9 and below, which is a reason why the comparison is bogus to begin with, because DirectX11 has a bunch of performance improvements. Are we really congratulating Valve on writing a wrapper that is capable of surpassing an 8-year-old API built on an even older OS's graphics model?

No, Valve mentioned OpenGL 4.2, and "Direct3D." They never stated it was D3D11, and until otherwise explicitly stated, this is an inaccurate assumptions by this article. It's almost certain that this was compared to their existing DirectX9 implementation of the source engine.

That depends entirely on the perspective of things. If Valve is trying to make the claim "OpenGL > DirectX" then you cannot make that claim accurately unless you use the newest version of BOTH APIs. You cannot compare the latest, greatest, and most efficient OpenGL implementation with an 8 year old API that doesn't take advantage of any of the latest driver models in Windows and get an accurate result.

They didn't say OpenGL > DX, they said that they got their own games running faster under OpenGL, huge difference. They aren't saying that the most modern implementation of DX is inferior, they're simply reporting the results of a very specific case study with Source.

No actually they made the claim "OpenGL is faster than DirectX on Windows" which is a very fragile thing to say, because what they really mean is "Source runs faster in openGL 4.2 than it does in DirectX9 on Windows." Such a statement can, will, and did get misinterpreted by many people. Just look at all the comments on all the articles about it how people are trying to make such claims.

Valve did a pretty poor job making that distinction clear, and I wouldn't be surprised if that was done purposely, given their stance lately on Windows, and trying to get outside support on everything "non-microsoft."

To make it clear as well, I'm not trying to say A is better/faster than B, all I was intending to do was make the distinction clear that the article has a pretty big inaccuracy in it that is going to lead people to untested and unverified conclusions before the proper tests have been issued.

Valve has been around and is stable. They constantly innovate.

My guess is that they probably have a rigorous hiring process with a personality assessment. This would let them find the kind of people who aren't lazy jackholes who will waste time sitting around with thumbs up there butts. They probably also hire people for projects initially and let them find their best fit within the needs of that project. If they suck, they can then go away when the project is done.

Working where you want to work isn't hype, its real and somehow it works.

A friend of mine who works at Valve took me on a tour of the office when I was in the area recently. One of the first things I noticed there is that the hallways are wide. I mean, SUPER wide. The reason: to roll desks around.

As for how no bosses doesn't devolve into chaos, its simple. People gravitate towards projects that they feel they can contribute to and that will impact customers in some way.

The most recent example is DOTA 2. The project started off as just two guys. Over time it ballooned into hiring the original DOTA WC3 mod designers and about 60 people total working on the project. The same thing happened with projects like the Mac and Linux ports, it seemed like a cool project for some employees to do so they just did it. Others agreed and they rolled their desks over.

If a project is cool, it will gain momentum.

There is a hivemind mentality at work there that only seems to be possible by hiring the right people, people who are not just talented but also simultaneously independent (can set personal goals and deadlines) and highly collaborative (can function within this hivemenind setup by actively helping on projects they can contribute to).

Half Life 3 will happen when it happens. It is either being held up in development and Valve isn't ready to announce it, or it is conceivable that enough people at the company aren't interested in working on it at the moment.

i think they must be nearly finished with hl3 - they are probably just waiting for new consoles that arnt running on 2005 tech.

(shame as i would buy a new pc just to play this game if they released it)

I think it is that and the game design. The linear on-rails cinematic shooter that Valve pioneered with Half Life and perfected with the sequels has become standard formula now, and it is a tired one.

They added unique mechanics and improved writing/storytelling with Portal and Portal 2. Whatever it is they have cooking for Half Life 3 will go beyond mere tech, that's a given. The game design itself has to be next level or it is pointless to ship, and I'm sure Valve is going to sit on it until they crack whatever innovations the game needs.

Half Life 3 being a mere engine update to the same old on-rails shooter formula is probably the most boring thing Valve can be doing right now. That's 100% what would have happened if they sold the studio to a publisher like EA or Activision, yearly or bi-annual Half Life sequels. Yawn. I love that they've instead shipped Portal 2 and DOTA 2 in the mean time, both amazing games. DOTA 2 is by far my most played game in the last couple years, so excellent.

He may be a critic but he sure as hell likes it. All the times I've seen Gabe he was glued to his iPad, and his main laptop right now is a Macbook Pro.

Maybe if this company had a "boss" LFD3 would have been done & release by now. Selling games for $5, finally releasing a converted homemade map (Cold Stream) isn't a smart way of dragging on a franchise.

Its either that or have some big publisher forcing scheduled bi-annual sequels. I'd much rather have Valve chasing their own creative muse rather than being railroaded into cranking out Half Life and Left 4 Dead sequels like every other studio is forced to with their own franchises.

I saw a Kickstarter for a VR headset made by a company called Oculus.

It's coming folks. cheap & low latency sensors, high resolution bendable screens... all made possible by continued tech innovation and inexpensive parts.

I can see it now, some poor person's house is marked as house of some villan, so they are constantly egged or shot at or what ever.
The sign for "Jack in the Box" is covered over to say Cracker Box" or the bill board Pepsi payed big bucks for is digitaly covered in a add for DrPib.

I guess at some point the law will catch up, but until then I do not want reality augmented scenes layered over my property. That is just asking for trouble.
