Company claims world's smallest Skype USB key phone adapter
VIVOphone this week announced a USB VOIP device called the VIVOphone VoiceKey that allows users to make and receive calls through Skype using a regular phone. The device is roughly the size of a Zippo cigarette lighter. There are no jacks for microphones or earphones, just one phone line jack for users to plug in either a corded phone or cordless phone. VIVOPhone claims that its VoiceKey is the world's smallest Skype to regular phone device. According to the press release:
VIVOphone VoiceKey (TM) is an adaptor connecting a regular phone or PBX to a USB port. It allows you to receive or dial VIVOphone and Skype calls in the same way as you use a regular phone. Your phone rings when some VIVOphone and Skype friend calls you. You can receive the call simply by picking up the handset. The most important feature of VIVOphone VoiceKey (TM) is that you may connect a cordless phone to it. Other VoIP phone products do not bring you such convenience.
Using the software included, VoiceKey users can associate numbers with Skype accounts. This way, a number can be dialed using a regular phone. When a user receives a call from other Skype users, a phone connected to the VoiceKey will simply ring.
Earlier last month, Vonage released a USB key device called the V-Phone which only contained Vonage software and required that users have their own microphone for making calls. Several analysts questioned the use of an actual USB hardware device as the software included could simply be downloaded and installed. The V-Phone did not allow the use of an external regular phone.
DailyTech also reported that a number of wireless Skype phones were announced by Belkin and NetGear. The phones use standard 802.11b or 802.11g standards and include embedded Skype software.
