Samsung prepares to take on the existing iPhone 5S and the upcoming 4.7" iPhone 6

After weeks of leaks, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha smartphone has officially been announced. The Galaxy Alpha represents a new design language for Samsung’s smartphone family, and will be extended to the upcoming Galaxy Note 4 judging by the leaked photos of that 5.7” device.

As we’ve already learned, the Galaxy Alpha sports a 4.7” 720p display, an Octacore Exynos processor (Quad 1.8GHz + Quad 1.3GHz), 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage (there is no microSD expansion slot), fingerprint sensor, 12MP rear camera, and 2.1MP front-facing camera. The smartphone also supports 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, NFC and USB 2.0 connectivity.

Compared to the Galaxy S5’s all-plastic construction, the Galaxy Alpha uses an aluminum frame and a removable plastic back. Behind that back cover is an 1,860 mAh battery which is 940 mAh less than the Galaxy S5.

When it comes to dimensions, the leaks got it right: the Galaxy Alpha is indeed lighter and thinner than the iPhone 5S, weighing in at 4.05 ounces and measuring 6.7mm thick.

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha will launch early next month in Black, Blue, White, Silver, and Gold. Pricing is not available at this time.
