Find My iPhone app running on an iPad
IOS 4.2.1 update coming later today

Apple announced this morning that the 4.2.1 update will be made available for iOS devices later today. IOS 4.2.1 brings the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad together when it comes to OS releases -- previously, the iPhone and iPod touch were using the 4.x branch of iOS while the iPad used 3.x.

IOS 4.2 finally gives iPad users the ability to multitask with applications and create folders among other things. Other features that will be rolled out to all iOS devices include AirPlay and AirPrint.

iOS 4.2 makes the iPad a completely new product, just in time for the holiday season,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. “Once again, the iPad with iOS 4.2 will define the target that other tablets will aspire to, but very few, if any, will ever be able to hit.”

Another bonus that Apple announced is that the Find My iPhone service will now be made available for free for select iOS devices. Previously, the service required a MobileMe subscription from Apple. Find My iPhone allows users to track down a lost or stolen iOS device and locate it on a map using Me.com or an iOS app (which be available for free from the App Store).

Unfortunately, the service will only be made freely available for users of the iPhone 4, iPod touch 4G, and iPad.

Updated 11/22/2010

The iOS 4.2.1 update is now live. It can be obtained using the "Check for Update" feature within iTunes.

This is what happens when you breath too deeply on your own farts.

That turtle neck has got to stink by now--having been worn all these years enduring all that gas. Sometimes, I imagine meeting Steve in a dark alley and kicking him in the nads but now, that I think about it (thanks to you pointing it out), all I'd really have to do is flick on a lighter from a relatively close proximity and he'd probably burst into flames.

My only question at that point would be--would he run around screaming with his arms up in the air or, would his eyes turn to a sinister shade of color and he'd laugh maniacally?

I think, having shed off his mortal coil, you would have accidentally released the apocalypse upon us all. All hail Carthulu, our new Dark Lord!

As long as The Dark Lord, doesn't have the Elder Wand, he can still be defeated. ;)

I don't know about you, but I think I can live without Steve flailing his elder wand about... ;)

That is no elder wand, Luke.

Avoid the dark side.

Capacity/Price improvements on SSDs and Performance/Price improvments in CPUs will rapidly commoditize the tablet market.

Furthermore, laptops will adopt SSDs in order to eliminate the boot speed advantage that the iPad has.

It's becoming increasingly clear to me that Apple knows they are in danger of losing big market share to Android and other more capable OS, and are playing the marketing game hoping to con the average Joe and especially the media, which apparently loves Apple (what other rather small company gets so much media attention?). Jobs, your time of reckoning is neigh. I anxiously wait for your fail. But the masses prove to be stupid so you may win.

So what happens when someone steals your iPhone and you track it down only to have your arms broken by the thug? What liability does apple have to this?

Same liability apple has when you get robbed of your iphone and are left with two broken arms.

The same liability s&w or federal will have for my actions when said thug tries to assault me.

Nice. Although SigSauer and Remington will be liable for my actions.

You might be able to remotely wipe it with a voice command, or have it call 911 while the thug is taking off. If your bluetooth is still in, you won't need arms.

I think they have something like that already. Um, Netflix via XBOX360, DVR, etc.?

Or DVI out on a computer? Ever heard of an HTPC? And WinPhone7 can do it as well, with a receiver box (which is how AppleTV does it). DLNA anyone?

Another truly innovative product from Apple. *cough cough*

I don't own an Apple TV nor do I plan on owning one, so Airplay actually has zero significance to me. With the Apple TV being a (currently) niche product, I'm sure a lot of other people feel the same way.

I am surprised how well Apple TV is selling. For a while it was No.12 on the Amazon best sellers list and as of ten minutes ago it was No.18.

Although it functions as a portal to Apple's online media store and things like YouTube it's primary strategic purpose is to create a simple way to display content from iOS devices on TVs. By the end of next year there will be a lot of iOS devices out there, expect 40 millions iPad sold in 2011 alone. Then the power of a simple gizmo like Apple TV linking your iPad to your TV will be very popular.

Apple TV is a long term strategic product, it is already selling very well and now that Airplay is here a lot of people will be buying Apple TVs as accessories to their Christmas iPads. Airplay is still limited in iOS 4.2 but expect it's scope to increase as it is integrated with more and more apps. Expect iPad V2 to come with a camera in the spring and then when iOS v5 arrives next year iPads will have FaceTime and Airplay which means video calls from the sofa with the coming video displayed on the TV.

Despite the grammar, this is great news. Now if my iPhone is stolen, I can use this app to find it! I'll just get out my phone and start the app...oh wait.

Apple knows people will take free before buying. Drug dealers always give away their stuff to get people hooked. Microsoft did a great job of this with DOS. Apple once gave away their OS until System 7 came out and look where that got them. If people hate apple so much, I guess they so little to do that posting on DT must make their day. See your DOS / drug dealer for more writing material.

It seems Apple did a good job this time, 4.2 is smoother and faster than 4.1.
Searching for text within websites is a feature I wanted for a while. They also fixed a lot of bugs.

Solid release, Well done!
