Unreal Tournament III may slip from it's planned November release date, but really, there are plenty of other games to play

If I were a betting man, I wouldn’t bet the farm on Unreal Tournament III hitting its proposed release sometime in November. Sure, everyone’s been saying November, including Epic Games, but in a forum thread discussing a countdown timer for UT3’s release, Epic’s Mark Rein wrote:

“We do not know exactly when the game will be completed. All we've said is that we're hoping for a November release but as you know we value getting it right over getting it right now so there's no guarantee of that.”

Uh oh. Not exactly the best of news. But really, is this anything new in the world of games? PC gamers especially should be used to developers saying “When it’s done,” and the same should apply here. In fact, that is exactly what Rein was saying.

“Nothing has changed at this point... We're working toward a November release,” Rein said to GamesIndustry.biz. “We don't know the specific release date yet and I think it is always prudent to remind our fans that we value quality over release date. They've come to expect that from UT and we don't want them to think we're handling UT3 any differently.”

And just to squash any rumors regarding the PlayStation 3 exclusively status: “The PS3 console exclusivity is not in doubt. We are shipping the game on the PS3 well before the Xbox 360 version ships,” Rein said. “That's the version we are working on right now. We do not have a date for the Xbox 360 version.”

Games that were born and became famous on the PC platform wont likely become a console-only title over night.

Yeah, that happened, but only because Activision gave it to a developer other than Infinity Ward, the one that did all previous CoD titles, the one that is doing CoD: Modern Warfare.

I subscribe to a few of the industry mags, and I recall reading a review of CoD:MW that alluded to just how impassioned the Infinity Ward guys are about this, THEIR series. Around their offices, the .exe for Modern warfare in named "CoD3", heh.

These guys are ALL about the PC...

Look on the bright side, when Vista's successor comes out you'll be able to play Halo III on it!

For some reason a Vista version will be incompatible with their business model for Vienna. Of course this assumes that they've actually changed their development model to get products out on time.

Back on the main topic, I am glad the new Unreal engine is ready, I have always found it to have superior graphics to most other games, while retaining a somewhat efficient design. Cough Cough... Crytek, Monolith Jupiter EX(Fear). I only wish that they still made the Unreal line of games to show it off. Although, I am somewhat glad they stopped after the mediocre quality of Unreal II.

Wasnt it Mark Rein himself who recently said that Crysis' CryEngine2 will represent the pinnacle of visuals on the PC for years to come? No, the Unreal engines have become less and less visually appealing over the years (compared to the competition), UE3 doesnt seem to be an exception.

Though, I still wanted to play Unreal3 - I dont care much about UT anymore.

Unreal Tournament... nope... no interest in it either.

I'd probably buy and play through Unreal III even if it was "garbage", much like I will probably play System Shock 3, despite the fact that EA may just shit something.

I didn't say that it would be the best visual quality of any engine, but it better than a lot of the competition. Of course CryEngine2 will be the best for a while.
I personally feel that Unreal Engine and Valve's source engine tend to create good visuals while requiring a lot less resources in comparison to others.

1) Crysis
2) Gears of War
3) Gutair Hero III

And countless other releases for PC...I'll get over UTIII being delayed :)

Team Fortress 2.
Half-Life 2 EP 2.
World in Conflict.

It's a good time to be a PC gamer.

I just hope they can re-create the formula that made the original UT such a classic hit (I specifically built my first machine for UT99). If they can do that I'll gladly wait till November of next year.
