Orders placed today will ship by Feb. 18

Apple and Verizon officially announced the CDMA version of the iPhone in early January, and pre-orders (for existing Verizon customers) opened up on February 3. Those pre-orders quickly sold out within a few hours -- a JPMorgan analyst puts the pre-order sales tally at 500,000 units.

Today, the Apple Store and Verizon are opening up pre-orders to everyone. Apple's online store now has purchase options for both the 16GB and 32GB Verizon iPhone 4 devices right next to purchase options for the same phone on AT&T's network. Those who pre-order a Verizon iPhone 4 today can expect the phone to ship by February 18.

Not surprisingly, the mythical white iPhone 4 is still unavailable on either network, although some reports suggest that it may make an appearance shortly.

IFixit earlier this week cracked open the CDMA version of the iPhone 4 and found that it incorporates Qualcomm's MDM6600 "dual mode" CDMA/GSM chip (the GSM portion of the chip, however, is disabled). That has lead some to speculate that the next iteration of the iPhone could very well support CDMA and GSM networks making it easier for customers to switch from one carrier to another and simplify production demands for Apple.

Verizon announced today that Walmart will be selling the Verizon iPhone 4 (16GB and 32GB models) starting tomorrow in 600 of its stores. "We're excited to bring iPhone 4 on Verizon Wireless, one the most anticipated mobile phone launches in recent history, to Walmart customers," said Gary Severson, senior vice president, Home Entertainment, Walmart U.S. "As customers continue to embrace smartphone technology, we've added nearly 20 smartphone models to our assortment, including the new iPhone 4 on Verizon Wireless."

Actually I think the white iPhone looks WAY better than the black one. Black is boring and overdone.

Don't worry. They'll be a special red U2 one soon that you can get at twice the price. Quite a bargin!!!

Besides, the white one will be introduced as the iPhone4S. Steve has to have something magical up his sleeve. He will call the white model the most "enchanting" color and that will be repeated ad-naseum in commercials until people really start to believe it.

Wow, I am glad I buy one phone, use for many years then change if I want something new, but seems like Apple releases new stuff every couple of months, & the same epople who bought the previous version buys just to say I got the latest, & the huge costs of these phones plus their other products, no wonder their profits are always high. Not hatin on Apple, as they are business to make money but wow, the popularity of these are amazing. All I need a phone to do is ring, maybe send a text message, & I don't want to pay for any contracts or data plans. Would someone buy another phone just cause it's white?

I wouldn't really say Apple comes out with something new (individual product wise) every couple months. It is closer to every year. That is inline with like 90% of electronic companies. The fact that you pay a subsidized price to be tied into a contract for 2 years is the only difference between buying an iPhone and buying the latest nVidia / ATI GPU.

Yeah, I kind of said that in jest. I have had the same PC the last 5 years so the only thing I added was ram, do you need to update your GPU every year? I guess, if you just bought an Iphone or Ipad last year, you probably need to upgrade, right....

The amount of press this phone gets is completely retarded. It's the same phone you either liked or didn't like 8 months ago except now it has a CDMA antenna. A bunch of suckers are going to be stuck on ~1Mbit 3G for the next 24 months while the rest of us hold out a few more months for a proper LTE feature phone.

When you really think about it, it makes absolutely no sense at all for anyone to care this much. Brainwashed masses are eating this up. It's a spectacle.

93m people couldn't use it without said CDMA antenna.

There is no LTE coverage in my area and I don't see it happening until next year. Not to mention 4g data speeds aren't needed for what I use my phone for anyway.

I hardly feel like a "sucker" for not having the latest and greatest mobile phone speeds... And I feel people care this much because Apple is a leader in the mobile technology sector, like it or not. Therefore, when they release a new project and change the trend of being completely closed (opening up to multiple carriers), it is news.

By Roffles on 2/10/2011 6:14:34 PM , Rating: 2
Your reasoning is absolutely terrible. Apple is still closed...just available on one more US carrier. You want to open it up? You need to "jailbreak" it. But that's not even my point. My point is the iPhone4 is on the verge of becoming deprecated in the face of a dramatic shift to a new generation of hardware and wireless broadband technology.

1. LTE equipped phones have 3G fail-over antennas. It doesn't matter what's available in your area right now. I believe Verizon is trying to have the greater majority of the country covered by the end of this year. Then they will cover major roadways in 2012. You'll be farting around on 1Mbit 3G until 2013...ouch.

2. Verizon is intentionally keeping quiet about its LTE enabled handset release dates and all the other pertinent details until the iPhone craze dies down. Why? Because this phone is hyped to epic proportions and everyone is buying said hype. It's the marketing equivalent of, "too big to fail". Profit profit profit! It's almost as if CES never happened and everyone forgot about LTE and the next generation of smart phone hardware.

3. The hardware advancements for the next generation of phones, including the iPhone5, is going to be a more dramatic step forward when compared to previous generations of hardware advancements. So waiting 2-4 months for nextgen phones from LG, Moto, HTC, Apple is smarter advice today than it was in previous years.

4. LTE is going to be 10-20Mbit+ compared to 1Mbit for 3G. Tether to a notebook or tablet and life is golden. True broadband speeds in the middle of nowhere. If that doesn't make you drool, why are you reading dailytech?

Now that I think about it, why do I even care what other people buy? I guess it's just strange/annoying/frustrating/confusing to see ill-advised consumers dominating message boards across the Internet with their babble.

By poohbear on 2/10/2011 10:15:53 PM , Rating: 2
The avg user could care less about LTE, 3G is plenty.

Where do I begin.

1. Lets give a golf clamp over the hype a phone receives for the "exclusive availability" of one different bland color. This makes headlines folks. Incredible.

2. a 3G CDMA iPhone with all sensational "LTE" advertising Verizon is pushing? And this version is an overnight headlining top seller?

Go U.S.A.!
