Apple is expected to bring an iPod upgrade September 7th. Who knows what hot surprises it has in store.   (Source: Macenstien)

Apple's MacBook Air badly needs an upgrade, as well.  (Source: Krunker)

Apple is also expected to announce an iTunes rental service and a new version of Apple TV.  (Source: IPhone News)
Could Cupertino be cooking up other surprises -- new iPads, MacBook Air updates, are a few possibilities

On September 7, Bloomberg is reporting that Apple will hold a special event in San Francisco.  Special events have meant one thing for Apple in the past -- product launches. And September has traditionally become Apple's time to air new iPods.

Bloomberg believes that at least one of the items revealed at the event will be a $99 Apple TV and 99 cent, 48-hour rentals via iTunes.  The new campaign would be geared at reviving the 3-year-old product that's perhaps the only laggard in Apple's successful stable.  And it would also try to fend off NetflixHulu, and other streaming video services.

News Corp. (owners of Fox), CBS Corp., NBC Universal, and Walt Disney Co (owners of ABC) are all reportedly onboard with the project.

A new iPod Touch, likely a clone of the iPhone 4, sans GSM wireless 3G hardware, is also expected to launch in September.  The key feature there will be the inclusion of Apple's higher resolution "Retina Display" (960x640 pixels) currently found on the iPhone 4.  A hot topic of speculation at this point is whether the MP3 player will feature a front-facing camera, which could allow VoIP video calling over using Apple's FaceTime.

Likewise, updated iPod Nano, Shuffle, and Classic seem likely as they typically see September upgrades.  The iPod Nano is currently in its fourth generation, the Shuffle is in its third generation (with some minor revisions), and iPod Classic has seen six generations.

Looking at Apple's other products, the MacBook was last updated in May and the MacBook Pro saw an April upgrade, so they seem unlikely candidates for new releases.

The Mac Pro, Apple's high end desktop was quietly upgraded on August 9, ditching NVIDIA's GeForce GT 120 for the ATI Radeon HD 5770 and getting the option of using two 2.66 GHz 6-core
Gulftown Intel Xeon (X5650) processors with 12 MB of L3 cache (up from the previous max of two four-core processors).

The iMac received an i3/i5 upgrade in July.  And the Mac Mini saw a June update.  Thus it is unlikely that Apple will reveal any new desktops. More likely is that Apple could upgrade the MacBook Air, its ultra-thin design which has languished without an update since June 2009.

Slightly less likely are rumors that Apple could be preparing to launch a smaller variant of its wildly successful iPad.  Also possible is that Apple could launch its long-rumored music streaming service, though that also seems less likely.

No one knows quite what Apple is cooking up, but on thing is for sure -- whether you love Apple or hate it, you'll likely be bombarded with Apple-related news on September 7.

Updated 8/25/2010
Apple has sent out official invitations for its event, and it's scheduled for September 1.

If Hulu can get Sports, SyFy, and Discovery channel its game over for me on Cable/Satellite.

Im in the process of setting up my Dual Tuner HD-Homerun with Windows Media center in Windows 7 for local channel recording. I have two additional HD tuners I can add as well for 4 HD OTA recording. Media Center can stream and be controlled from an X-Box 360.

Sprinkle on a Netflix subscription and Hulu Plus streaming on an X-Box 360 and I believe I have a $20.00 alternative to Cable/Satellite.

Netflix is getting a big influx of movies in September I believe and Hulu Plus is coming to the 360 early next year.

I posted the above because

Good luck with that Apple but then I cant explain some of your fans with the gigabytes.

A $100 720p Apple TV is no match for $150.00 1080p X-Box 360 with Netflix, Hulu, and Zune Marketplace. I cant imagine who in the world would buy an Apple TV device unless to load XBMC on it.

Apple needs to learn to embrace companies like Netflix and Hulu and come up with a model so they get a cut like Microsoft requires the gold membership.

I don't want Apple to embrace the goodness that MS gives us. I am running 2 HDHRs and one Haup dual HD tuner, netflix and have been stocking up with 360s for sharing the HD goodness. I am looking forward to seeing what HuluPlus will carry eventually because right now it is still limited to showing the last 5 episodes of the current season. I need my USA and FX also for Burn Notice, Justified and Sons of Anarchy. Apple, Bah.

I don't need any of those things. Just give me the red head in the picture.

trust me @ $150 the xbox 360 arcade is no bargain when using it as an extender or simple media player. those f-ing fans get to loud. hell to all those that say otherwise.

for the peace and quiet that the apple tv or any media player without fans provide id gladly give up any extras the 360 arcade has (for use as a media playback device).

See this I don't understand.
The fan noise to me isn't an issue as generally if I am using an Xbox 360 to play Video or Music, the volume from the media I am playing is usually loud enough to shake the windows.

...Thus impossible to hear the fan noises making it a non-issue in my case.

I could understand if you were not using a Home Theater system and had it whisper quiet, but seriously that defeats the purpose of sitting down and watching a movie in HD with all the bells and whistles.

You can get Hulu right now with Playon software.

I have it; it's great. You should try it.

disclaimer: I neither work for, nor profit in any way from, the company behind Playon software. I'm just a huge fan.

Yes, and because they call it magical, every news story containing anything related will have to call it magical.

Touch GPS I hope
By EchoSquared on 8/25/2010 12:13:34 PM , Rating: 2
Personally I'd just like to see the touch get GPS functionality without having to buy a seperate adapter that are currently available for almost the same price as an 8 gig touch.

RE: Touch GPS I hope
By menting on 8/25/2010 12:55:34 PM , Rating: 3
ditto.
For me tho, I'd like to see them include a sim card slot as well, like the ipad (though most likely they won't do it, since it'll affect iphone 4 sales).
if they add GPS + sim card, and keep it under 300 bucks, the ipod touch would be my first ever Apple product.

Haven't you just described a device which is practically an iPhone 4 without the phone and priced about one fifth the price? So as much as I'd like that device (and that is what I do with my iPhone 4 now - I don't call from it, I just use it as a music player and internet device) I'm almost sure Apple wouldn't do that.

The iPad is another story because it's so big and impractical, it's not fending off competition from a pocket-sized smartphone, it has it's own market.

I see...

They already have those. They're called iPod Touches. Unless they plan to rebrand them as mini-iPads without telling anyone...

So I assume if they come out with a large screened iPad, they should call it the Maxi-iPad?

New stuff

Imagine a world where every time any company released or updated a product, there was a "Special Event" linked to the release. Just imagine having to decide whether to go to Charmin's event releasing their updated quilting pattern, or Nabisco's launch event for the Ritz crackers with an embossed "summer" pattern.

All I care about...
By bravacentauri83 on 8/25/2010 6:53:53 PM , Rating: 2
...is whether or not the new iPods will have more than 100gb of storage. I've been encoding my music in ALAC and would like to house my library on the iPod instead of having to pick and choose what music I want on the device. I've kept my 160GB 5th gen model around for that sole purpose.

Nice, but...
