When it rains, it pours at Sony

DailyTech reported yesterday that Sony had all but given up on its UMD efforts with the release of an equally (if not more) expensive “MemoryStick Entertainment Pack." Today, there are rumors that Target is pulling UMD movies from its store shelves altogether.

The reports come from Kotaku and they cite sources within the company as providing them with the information. According to the sources, Sony’s UMDs are being quickly pulled and shipped back  to Target headquarters to presumably restock Target.com's UMD inventory.

I don't know how Sony thought that they would be able to push UMD on PSP owners in the first place. It's not like the PSP has been a complete smash hit, so widespread penetration just is not there. There's also the issue with high UMD price tags and no bonus features that one would expect from a standard DVD release. Also, many tech-savvy PSP owners already rip their DVD movies to MemorySticks so what’s the point? If the comments from yesterday's MemoryStick Entertainment Pack article are any indication, it looks as though Sony may have yet another failure on its hands when it comes to bringing movies to the PSP.

Betamax, MiniDisc, UMD, Blu-Ray, what's next? I don't see how they can make billions when everything they develop fails (except PS PS2 of course)

Indeed. It was probably their breakthrough product.

Well, as much as I dispise the company, they did have ONE format that did withstand the test of time...
They had a role in making it at least.

Redbook

Google it.

Seriously Dailytech, where have you been these past 6 months?

Are we talking the same thing here? This blog is about Target dropping UMDs.

This news broke just recently:

Or am I missing something?

Let's get this straight. The largest factor why UMD fails is not because it's propietary, but Sony's greed. Charging an UMD as much as a DVD, and in some cases, MORE than a DVD, when they are clearly just squeezing extra revenue from existing content in their library. There's a myth that anything propietary fails, but in reality, it's not. PS2 disc can't be read on your PC, Xbox, GameCube, but PS2 still sells. The fact is, consumer just wants something that is cheap and works. If Sony sold UMD movies for less than 5 bucks, or bundled them with DVD releases for 2 or 3 bucks extra, UMD would definitely did a lot better.

Red Herring

Just another Red Herring sacrificed to the Sony lords. I almost feel sorry for the people that bought the PSP, but I hear that some are happy and the rest wanted to get gypped.

Sony needs to be careful though, or PETA will crack down on their improper use of fish (or birds according to Douglas Adams) to further their marketing strategy.
