The PS3 Movie Pack coming March 19  (Source: Game-Class)

The GT5P bundle coming on March 29  (Source: Game-Class)
Two ways to sell PS3: with movies or with games

Hot on the heels of Sony Computer Entertainment America’s announcement of a new 80GB PlayStation 3 bundle with Metal Gear Solid 4 and DualShock 3 controller, comes word of another bundle from SCE Europe.

Rather than take a page from the SCEA bundle, which definitely won’t appear until after the release of Metal Gear Solid 4, the SCEE has designed two distinct bundles that will hit stores in March.

As a clear recognition of the PlayStation 3’s draw as a Blu-ray Disc player, on SCEE will be launching on March 19 a special movie-bundle package. The special movie package will include the 40GB PlayStation 3 with Spider-Man 3, 300 and Casino Royale. No Bluetooth remote control is included, but the SIXAXIS packed-in will do the job.

At the end of the month, on March 29, the same 40GB PS3 hardware with the same SIXAXIS controller will include Gran Turismo 5 Prologue rather than any movies.

European gamers may be saddened the the new bundles still include the SIXAXIS controller, rather than the newer DualShock 3. The force feedback controller has been available in Japan since 2007, and has been announced for an April release in the U.S.

Both packages will retail for 399 Euro, and neither will include any video cables for high-definition output.

Can they still not afford to throw in a cable that would cost them an additional $5, at the most? Freak.

Seriously. Microsoft includes an HDMI cable in the Elite. No reason they can't as well. Especially since they likely produce the cable themselves.

Maybe Sony's supplier is actually Monster, and they are reaming them on cable costs :)

*laughs* I was thinking the same thing.

Seriously have you seen the discount you can get on those cables? It was from 40-60% off when I worked at Best Buy a few years ago. I bought crap loads then, but I don't now that I have to pay full price.

I wouldn't be surprised.

They should just give us a choice at the beginning:

1) Composite
2) S-Video
3) Component
4) HDMI

Don't throw all of them at us and don't give us gimped composites. Let us choose one and be done with it.

They could at the very least throw an s-video tail on those damn composite cables.

What bugs me the most is the proprietary connector on the back of each game console; I want to be able to use the $5 A/V special from Target if the dog chews up my original, damn it!

LOL, When I was engaged to my wife, her roommate left her rabbit out. The furry little waste producer chewed my then prized stereo cables to junkyard heaven.

So I can feel your pain on expensive cable replacements.

My one regret was not leaving on the stereo.

Fortunately the PS2 component cables are fully capable of doing the job, You don't have to buy PS3 cables to get analog HD:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000SJ61BK/...

Also HDMI cables are dirt cheap:

http://www.ebuyhd.com/products/product.asp?c_id=10...

But like I said, they should let us choose. Hell they could have just given us S-video cables with a composite adapter:

http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-S-Video-Composi...

If HDMI cables and component cables weren't so damn cheap I would have been more upset by this.

Not to mention that 5 dollars saved could potentially be several million dollars Sony saved after several million consoles sold. - It all adds up!

In Europe, the SCART connector is the usual way to connect analogue signals (either Composite, S-Video, or RGB) rather than having a specific socket for each video type. Adapters are available very cheaply, but most European users would be better off if the bundle included a PS2/PS3 to SCART cable than any other connector.

Why include HDMI cables if not everyone will use them? I understand there is a market for people who use them but its a greater market for people who can use the composite cables (100% if you are purchasing a PS3 anyways).

Maybe Sony is saying "If you have a hidef tv then you can go and purchase one, you can get whatever brand you want"

I know it would be more convienent but I, for one, do not have an HDMI capable display so it would just add another cable in to my 'electronics cache'.

My thing is they should at least include an HDMI cable with the movie bundle. Why buy that bundle if you don't have an HDTV (or get one in the near future)?

By kyp275 on 2/28/2008 4:48:21 PM , Rating: 3
it's not really that big of a deal. If you can afford a PS3 and a HDTV, chances are you can afford that $5 HDMI cable :P

True. It is more of a convenience thing, though.

And principle. If you're willing to put in 399 Euros (600 bucks) they should at least give you an HDMI or component cable.

The PS3 is a high-definition console, not including the neccesary cable is just plain cheap. Sony like to boast about how it is a great high-definition player, and the 'centre of your digital world' - yet they provide you with the worst possible connection out of the box.

To not include the cable with the blu-ray bundle is a joke to say the least. Sony pretend that the PS3 is all-inclusive as standard, yet it doesn't even come with a £10 cable.

Fortunately the PS3 is a fantastic blu-ray player for a cheap price, so it's partially forgiven.

Well atleast Sony doesn't charge $200 for a $60 harddrive upgrade for 95 percent of the population that have pro models. Heck even the ones that want an elite model(thats overpriced to begin with(hdmi + $30 upgrade on top of 20gb HD =/ $100) can't even find them.

Get out of DT, how dare you point out that MS screw the consumer over.

They do it for America and to show any sort of decent will only meant that you will end up with a -1 rating and a one way ticket to GitMo.

It's clear that Sony are the real monsters, letting people buy whatever grade of HDMI cable they want, if you want a $5 cable, that's fine, if you believe in the 1.3/1080p certified stuff then spend a bit more, you are free to choose, at market rates.

Maybe Sony should have a special connection so that only a Sony cable can fit in and charge $40 for it and everyone will be happy?

I am somewhat sceptical about that too.

As it happened, my TV came with a "certified" cable anyways :)

i have just bought a component cable for my Wii though :-s

Conspiracy theory time: Sony wants retailers to push the PS3 more heavily than the Xbox 360. Since cables are always a VERY high margin item, a retailer may be more inclined to sell the PS3 just to profit from the sale of an overpriced HDMI cable.

Can I plug my favorite cable store? Not sure... but I will anyways!

www.monoprice.com

That's all you need to know for cables!

And yes they ship international.

Why would I want a DUALSHOCK 3?
By Tilmitt on 2/28/2008 4:04:04 PM , Rating: 2
I'd rather not have a heavier controller. I felt the same when they brought out the analogue controllers years ago to replace the digital ones.

but after using the ps3 controllor for a while. The 360 feels like a brick.

Well remember the sixaxis is virutally the same size as the dualshock so you have no worry of it feeling like the "bricky" 360 remote.

Also the rumble makes a big difference when gaming, a BIG difference.

RE: Why would I want a DUALSHOCK 3?

I think he means it's rather 'heavy' as opposed to 'large in size'.

By AlphaVirus on 3/3/2008 2:12:15 PM , Rating: 2
Thanks for claryfing, I thought he meant bricky as in 'the size of a brick'.

I will have 2 sixaxis and 2 dualshocks as I am sure some of my friends will have a preference of the weight differences.

By Marcus Yam on 2/28/2008 5:51:54 PM , Rating: 2
I think it's not virtually the same size, it's exactly the same size.

There is a definite feeling of added heft in it though. It's almost alarming after you get used to the SIXAXIS.

Really though, DualShock 3 or bust.

OMG, you mean there isn't any difference between my high end top of the line super shielded with integrated signal lost detection/performance boost enhancement 6.5" cable which cost me $200 and that "thing" you purchased for 6 bucks? How the heck that does work? ;) Good times Monster, good times...

Want the Gran Turismo 5 Prologue Bundle in the US!
By mcmilljb on 2/28/2008 6:16:51 PM , Rating: 2
I would like to see that bundle available in the US. I think it would pretty popular. Having decent bundles available each quarter/half could help increase some sales.

these aren't coming out in the US?

Thats sucks.

Pretty solid bundles...though I know the European gamers over at GameTrailers are still going to bitch and moan.

RE: Not bad

I might bitch and moan still when my console cost 50 percent more than the canadian or us or Japan version.

E.g

2 movie do not cost 200 dollars.

Backwards Compatibility?
By oDii on 2/29/2008 2:02:20 AM , Rating: 2
Why does Sony insist on only giving backwards compatibility to US/Japan? It's the only reason I don't have a PS3 already; I don't like Sony's policy of giving Europe/AUS/NZL the gimped hardware.

"If you can find a PS3 anywhere in North America that's been on shelves for more than five minutes, I'll give you 1,200 bucks for it." -- SCEA President Jack Tretton
