Low demand makes Turion X2 unattractive for manufacturers

We just received word from several tier one notebook manufacturers in the form of internal AMD memos that the original May 9 launch of Turion X2 (featured on serveral roadmaps) has been pushed back.  In late March we first heard from AMD insiders that Turion X2 was intended to launch on May 9, 2006, but there were already several folks who told us the processor was delayed.  No reason for the delay was given on the official memos, though manufacturers tell DailyTech that demand for existing Turion notebooks is extremely low.

AMD recently advanced the release of the Athlon 64 AM2 socket launch from June 6, 2006 to May 23, 2006.   Intel anticipates launching its second generation Core Duo processor for notebooks, Merom, sometime this summer.

hurry up, AMD!

I really hope that the Turion X2 release gives AMD a bit of momentum in the mobile sector. With the Core Duo around, the single-core Turions have been dying, dying dying... : (

At the very least, the Turion X2 will offer some viable competition to force prices down a bit. : ) It would be the superior solution at the moment for anyone who wants a future-proofed laptop.

Yes this is quite worrying. If Merom will be released in August, there won't be many months left for AMD to have the 64-bit advantage in the dual-core mobile market.

I really don't see a reason to worry. AMD has most powerful CPU on the market. Nothing is going to change that till next generation of Intel or AMD design.
You all belive to promises and unconfirmed benchmarks.
AMD did last architectural introduction 13 months ago - it was X2 chip designed in 2003/2004. They have 3x more design engineers than during AMD64 was created.
What matters is a sales figures:
Slowers sale = a nned to show a new product...
And as you probably know AMD is not able to satisfy all customers with their chips.

While the Merom chips are scheduled to be shipped to ODMs in August, we won't see laptops for them until January most likely. Most ODMs release their new models in January...

How Fast?

Has anybody seen any benchmarks of the Turion X2? I'm curious how fast it will be when compared to the A64 X2 and the Core Duo.

Well it is ture that turion notebooks arent that big of a seller, AMD processors are still pretty new to the moble market compared to intel...
I myself was really looking forward to getting my hands on the MSI S271 turion x2 notebook... guess i just have to wait longer >.<

It's true that Turion is only a year old, but their marketshare has grown well beyond what most realise...
As of Q4 05, they were up to 15.5% on mobile...results for Q1 06 should be out in the next week or two, but most expect that AMD took even more this last quarter.

I think Turion Mobile is a Socket 754 processor. So all of you who own a socket 754 motherboard, you migh want to get your hopes up; because a low power dual core chip could be coming your way.

Misleading?

How can it be officially delayed if its based on a) unofficial info that it would be released on 5.9. and b) its just info from notebook manufacturers, not from AMD?

Havent seen a press release for either of the claims. Maybe I'm just blind though..

We're going by memos and roadmaps from AMD. This information is all sanctioned and published by AMD, it just isn't distributed to the public.

I thought it wasn't going to be out until august-ish, but may would be awesome. Anytime this summer is better than at the end of it, but a delay is annoying because it gives less time for a good selection of models to get established before I get to choosing and buying one in august/septermber. I'm hoping for an AMD based model similar to the asus v6j: http://usa.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=5&l2=61&l3=0&...
