The Galaxy S II is coming in the next few weeks to 3 of America's top four networks. The best model appears to be on Sprint's network (left), but all sound pretty nice.
Verizon is left out of the GS II party -- for now

Samsung Electronics Comp., Ltd. (SEO:005930) scored a sales hit with its Galaxy S smartphone, powered by Google Inc.'s (GOOG) industry-leading Android operating system.  Now the phone's successor -- the Galaxy S II -- has been officially announced for three of the U.S.'s top four carriers.

The release comes just days after the official Samsung announcement of a larger-screen Galaxy S II variant and just weeks after pictures of the upcoming models leaked to PocketNow.

As rumored, the phone will launch on AT&T, Inc. (T) [press release], Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) [press release, spec sheet], and Deutsche Telekom AG's (ETR:DTE) T-Mobile USA [press release] -- America's second, third, and fourth largest networks, respectively.  Noticeably absent from the party is Verizon Communications, Inc. (VZ), America's largest wireless network.

Moving on to the phones themselves, you'll notice some slight differences in the various models, which can be seen below:

The Sprint version arguably sounds the best with a true 4G modem, larger screen, and exclusive larger battery.  It also is arriving the first.

All three of the phones will start off running Google's latest Android operation system, Gingerbread, and will eventually receive an update to Ice Cream Sandwich -- a new release of Android that's coming this fall.

Samsung brags that the new phone is the world's "thinnest 4G phone" (8.89 mm).  Sounds about right.  If you're in the market for an Android, you'll definitely want to check these out as they're some of the best  the market has to offer.

Those such as my wife using the existing Epic 4G are anxiously waiting for the official release of Gingerbread on their device, which has been a long time coming as there are a barrage of issues on that phone.

I hope the rumors aren't true in that Gingerbread will now cease to appear on the prior models in favor of selling the newer models.

Android: bugs bugs bugs with no firmware updates

Some of your comments (e.g. your comment on cybernetics) have shown increased maturity, but here you're just talking out of your ass Pirks.

My EVO 4G on Sprint is up to date with the latest Gingerbread and I've rarely if ever encountered a bug. In fact my friends with iPhones have related more bugs to me with their phones than I've personally experienced.

As for security, a lot of that is in the hands of the user. I carefully monitor my phone just like I would my PC. That's the model everyone should practice. Sure in fantasy land master Apple/BB will protect you forever and ever, but in reality, there will come a time when they fail to.

I agree BB has the best when it comes to encryption, etc. But most don't needed that.

As for the battery life it gets you through the day, I have no real complaints.

And that apps aren't bad either. Anyone who thinks Apple is the only one with 3D games should play Nova -- it's like Infinity Blade graphics quality FPS. You should play it, you'll be impressed.

Mick, shouldn't the Galaxy S II in the chart up there under T-Mobil also have a 4.3 screen? I am a little confused.

What cybernetics post? Did I post anything about cybernetics? Where?

You sure you didn't mix me up with someone else, Jason?
My EVO 4G on Sprint is up to date. I carefully monitor my phone.
Do you represent the typical consumer population? Oh wait, you're a geek. Well, this figures :) Sure for basement dwelling geeks Android is a cool toy - see ma, I can flash my ROM!

Nah, I like Dead Space on my Playbook better, thank you.

That's you right?

It was actually a thoughtful comment... I voted you up, since I hadn't left a comment & could still vote...

Maintaining security has nothing to do with being a "geek". I admit being a geek/technology enthusiast helps, but if you don't maintain security you're endangering yourself financially.

Nah, I like Dead Space on my Playbook better, thank you.

Which is also on Android (Xperia Play exclusive, sadly, for now... but not due to HW constraints). :)

Thank you for proving my point!

Yeah that was a post about prosthetics, not cybernetics but whatever

"I admit being a geek/technology enthusiast helps" <<== Thank you for proving my point!

Now, Jason, could you please stop lying about RIM like you did here:

I posted a bunch of critique there debunking your lies, hopefully you will manage your Android zealotry bias better in your future posts here. Good luck with that, Jason.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Just gimme a solid example of immature security. And pls be
kind enough to add an example of a bug in android os and not in some stupid app.
Your comment only holds true for the games when compared to iphone the rest must be thrown to garbage.
Keep your stupid comments to yourself pls.

Keep your stupid comments to yourself pls
Even Anand noticed how badly slow and poorly done Android GUI was in his reviews, according to him Android UI was all ugly stutter. I trust Anand and don't trust basement dwellers like yourself, so buzz off pls.

And the lack of updates for old Android devices is well known, everyone knows the famous "buy new Android phone every year or stay with old OS forever" motto. Don't pretend the issue doesn't exist, no one but a few ROM tinkering basement dwellers will believe you.

What anandtech smartphone reviews are you referring to..?

Having read almost all of them (hell, I've been reading his reviews for about 14 years -- reason I bought a Riva TNT back in the day), I can say that all the smartphone reviews are unbiased, incredibly insightful, and very indepth. In general, all the android devices since the beginning have had glowing reviews, though they have no problem at all pointing out any bugs and oversights they spot in the review process.

Are you trolling or are you really this stupid and immature?

There are those of us on Android that enjoy 4G speeds and unlimited data with the ability to watch flash, integrate with our home network, install and mod whatever programs/ROMs we want.

The rest of the tools out there prefer the BBs and iPhone, like you. :)

The some what confirmed rumor is that Verizon will be putting out the Google/Samsung Nexus Prime in October. It'll basically be a Galaxy SII with more clock speed and a 720p display and running Android 4.0

RE: Meanwhile

Verizon passed on the Galaxy SII phones.....because they didn't think they'd present much challenge to the iPhone release (according to leaked internal memos). Instead, they're releasing something better, aka Droid Prime. Combined with the Bionic and Vigor launch, Verizon is sitting quite pretty on future phone releases.

Canada Eh?

Wow, Canada has had the Galaxy S 2 for several weeks already. It's not often we beat the US carriers in getting new models.

Maybe Apple's patent on the shape of a frozen food tray doesn't apply in Canada.

already own one on At&t

Thats great and all but after getting one of these off Amazon last week. I am completely happy. You can also find a 1800mAh battery on amazon that is the exact size as the standard one.

Does suck a little to spend $620 on a phone since At&t doesn't have lower plans for out of contract which they should since I'm not recouping a phone. I guess I'll just get one for 200 when it comes out. Root/jailbreak it and sell it on ebay.

The phone is insanely fast. I upgraded from a iPhone 3G and its the differene of night and day in speed.

On HSPA+ I currently have speed tested about 2.6Mbps down and .83Mbps up. Not too bad at all seeing as no carrior offers true 4G in my area so At&t still has the fastest network here.

I got to keep my iphone data plan as well. This slightly worried me since I had to get a new sim because I was having connection issues with my old one. But keeping Unlimited data is a big plus.

Glad I didn't wait

Took forever for this thing to come out and now it is even less impressive than I was expecting.

Gigantic screen
Low resolution
No NFC chip

Possibly bad battery life.
