Toshiba's P105-S921 is the first to bring the NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900GS to market

Toshiba has sat on the sidelines for too long in the gaming notebook arena, so they are now coming out swinging with the new Satellite P105-S921. With Toshiba's launch also comes the first announced design win for NVIDIA's new GeForce Go 7900GS mobile GPU.

The P105-S921 will take its place at the top of the Satellite P105 product line and shares the same 7.1 pound frame. The P105-S921 comes spec'd out with the aforementioned GeForce Go 7900GS with 256MB GDDR3 memory (375MHz core/500MHz memory), 1.83GHz Core Duo T2400 processor, 17" WXGA screen (1440x900 w/TruBrite), 1GB PC5300 DDR2 memory, 160GB SATA hard drive, DVD SuperMulti drive and Windows XP Professional. Other niceties such as Harman/Kardon speakers, fingerprint reader, 5-in-1 media reader, ExpressCard slot, 4 USB 2.0 ports, i.LINK IEEE-1394 and TV-out (S-Video) are also included.

The P105-S921 retails for $1,999 and is available now from Toshiba Direct.  Jennifer DeLeo writes to tell us PCMagazine already has more information about the P105-S921 available here.

160GB HDD, but....

Even with a gig of RAM in this beast you're going to be experiencing a lot of swap file access. A 4200RPM HDD is not really up to this task.

The x2 Turions are coming out very soon. I am holding out for one too. Soon I will have my dream laptop.

my dream laptop is the one with the best performance and best battery life.
right now that appears to be core duo based.
in the near future, when x2 turions and conroe are out,
all signs point to intel increasing their lead.

4200rpm HD
By Lotus SE on 3/28/2006 6:20:07 PM , Rating: 2
The 4200rpm HD uses perpendicular recording. The density is higher, and therefore the read speed is faster for a given rpm (if same size platter).

This means that that 4200rpm HD might be faster than a 7200rpm drive. It depends on the density ratio of the perpendicular recording/to standard magnetic media. and how that compares to the ratio of 4200/7200, for example.

Doh! Just realized that that is probably not a perpendicular HD. Nevermind.

Still I think I could give up a little HD speed for more GB and battery life.

Mind that with a 7800 GS, dual core, and 17 Inch LCD.....

whoops...7900 GS....the thing is going to be a power hog no matter what drive you put in.

LCD

Also it only has a 1440x900 screen. It had better have a lower retail price, if they expect to sell many.

That's actually not a bad gaming resolution *if* the game supports it and the screen is actually high quality.

I can only see this one selling if the price drops below $1500.

There are so many things wrong with those specs.

Toshiba has failed again.

Wow..
I guess we're all expected to be able to design/build/ship notebooks if we're going to comment on the final product.

It sure would cut down on a lot of dumb comments if that was the case.
The fact is this laptop fits a niche market just right and should do very well for itself assuming that the unit is a quality build.
I cannot say this it suites my needs 100% and I wish they had a few more customisable options (CPU, RAM, HD and Video) but overall this is a powerful laptop at a decent price.

my laptop has far worse specs than this but it runs most games at its native resolution (when the game lets you) of 1280x800. And thats on an ati x700xl, pentium m 1.7ghz and a gig of RAM.

You have NO clue what you are saying. I have a lesser equiped laptop and I play F.E.A.R, Doom, Q4 and many other games just fine. Laptops can be every bit as good as a desktop you just pay for it.

I have no doubt this laptop will play everything on the market today and for the next few years without any problems.

That being said - I would still swap out the HD for a 5400 or maybe 7200 rpm drive (Depending on system heat).

Why 1.83 GHz?
By Shadowself on 3/28/2006 4:50:19 PM , Rating: 2
If it's really a gamer's machine why is it not shipping with the 2.16 GHz version of the core duo? Even Apple is shipping this ship, and no sane person thinks Apple's laptops are gamer machines.

30 fps =! playable

Try playing UT 2k4 with 30 fps. Feels like you're watching a slideshow.

And a desktop still has better performance per dollar than these new dtr laptops.

zzz.

I played ut2k4 at 30 or less fps for a long while, I was fine and still often managed to emerge near the top. Depends on what you can take ... I never really have 50+ fps, so I'm fine with 30.

The fps of human eyes is about 30 (hence movies are at 24 and PAL TV 25) so intheory its good enough.

I can tell the difference between 60Hz and 85Hz on my CRT.

You may not "see" the difference, but it is perceptable.

30fps as an average and may not be that great as it will drop below and go above in certain situations.

Actually the US Airforce tests pilots at 200fps (Its part of their testing to identify an aircraft)

HyperNova-
"The fps of human eyes is about 30 (hence movies are at 24 and PAL TV 25) so intheory its good enough"

If you were really into FPS games, you wouldnt say that...it aint the same playing at 30 fps as it is at 100+... simply doenst feel the same...and your score wont be the same i can tell you that... imagine if are in a room with lots of explosions, people dying and respawning, etc...at 30 fps your DEAD...
