Honeycomb tablet sports removable battery that can play HD video up to seven hours on single charge

Reuters reports that Toshiba is throwing its hat into the new tablet wars, with the upcoming Toshiba Thrive.

The Android 3.1-based 10.1-inch (1280 x 800) tablet will come in 8GB ($429), 16GB ($479), and 32GB ($579) sizes. Powered by NVIDIA's Tegra 2 and sporting the typical WiFi, Bluetooth, and USB, the Thrive also supports an SD card and features two cameras: a 2-megapixel front-facing one and a 5-megapixel rear.

According to Engadget, the Thrive rocks a haptic display with a button to lock the screen orientation. Toshiba also includes its Resolution+ software, used for cleaning and upscaling video playback.

The Thrive is also one of few tablets that sports a removable (and swappable) battery. It is said to last for up to seven hours of continuous HD video playback on a single charge, and will recharge up to 90 percent in an hour and a half, Engadget reports.

The one downside is its weight. "At 1.6 pounds, it's about as heavy as the first-gen iPad, which, like, scads of other tablets, has since gone on a diet," Engadget writes.

The Thrive is expected to become available for pre-order from Best Buy, Amazon, and others, beginning June 13.

Thank god for this name, manufacturers besides Toshiba and Motorola so far havent been very creative or original with their tablet names.

Ya this is a must for most people.. Although this is Android, there are many apps and utils to map buttons on your phone to other functions.

I've mapped holding down volume up for example on my phone to lock the orientation ;)

I'm waiting for someone to get smart enough to use the front-facing camera to augment the accelerometer for sensing orientation. If the camera sees your face oriented a certain way which disagrees with the accelerometer, it overrides the accelerometer. If it can't distinguish a face, it uses the accelerometer readings.

Oh, I'm sure HP will be the first to come up with a system like that. Except it won't recognize "people of color".

Yer agree, having originally set it to mute on the my iPad2 when I got it I quickly realise why people kicked up a stink when they swapped the button function over a while back...

True - Toshiba bogs down EVERY PC with crap and at the time of the Vista crisis was the worst offender of the out of box lock up.

Toshiba sucks.
