Oops, Toshiba announces another massive recall
Although things have been relatively quiet since Toshiba’s last battery recall, the silence has yet again been broken, this time due to a hazard found in Toshiba AC adapters.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) along with Toshiba America Consumer Products LLC today announced a voluntary recall of Toshiba AC Adapters sold with the Toshiba Model SD-P1600 portable DVD player. The affected DVD players were sold from January 2005 through April 2006 for $200 to $230.
Two reports of minor damages to the bottom of the DVD player that were received by Toshiba lead to further investigation. After closer inspection, it was found that the AC adapters can potentially fail, which causes the DVD players to overheat, posing a burn hazard to consumers. So far, however, no injuries have been reported.
In order to identify a faulty AC adapter, Toshiba says that “ADPV16” can be found on the adapter’s side. A “Model SD-P1600” serial label can be found on the bottom of the portable DVD player unit.
The CPSC estimates that there are 142,000 units of the AC adapters, which are manufactured in China, in circulation within the North American market.
The CPSC suggests consumers to immediately stop using the AC adapters and to contact Toshiba Customer Solutions for a free replacement adapter. Consumers are advised to only use AC adapters provided by Toshiba.
This past August, Toshiba recalled 1,400 laptop batteries provided by Sony. However, all of these recalls were dwarfed by Sony's 2006 recall of nearly 340,000 Toshiba laptop batteries.
