Toshiba sleep-and-charge USB ports charge USB devices when the notebook is turned off

Toshiba announced a new L350 Satellite series of notebooks today that has a 17.1-inch form factor. The notebook includes an AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-core TL-60 processor running at 2 GHz.

The operating system for the machine is Windows Vista Home Premium and the L350 ships with 2GB of PC5300 DDR2. Storage comes from a 200GB 4200 RPM SATA hard drive and a SuperMulti DVD burner with Labelflash is included.

Graphics for the notebook are ATI Radeon X1240 with shared graphics memory. Wireless networking is via an Atheros 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi adapter. The L350 also includes a trio of Toshiba’s new sleep-and-charge USB ports. Aside from the price, these special USB ports are a highlight for the system.

The new sleep-and-charge USB ports are able to charge USB devices while the notebook is turned off or in sleep mode. Typically to recharge a USB device you have to leave your computer on. The USB ports get power as long as the notebook is plugged into the AC outlet.

Jeff Barney, Toshiba vice president of marketing, digital products division said in a statement, “Toshiba has long been a leader of innovation, and prides itself on creating solutions that make the digital lifestyle even better. With the development of the Sleep-and-Charge USB ports, Toshiba has developed an innovative technology that helps ensure that our digital products are ready for use at the moment we need them."

In addition to the new L350 satellite the Toshiba U400, M300, A300 and P300 series notebooks also now feature sleep-and-charge USB ports.

What a useful feature

And how hard is this simple yet noteworthy feature to implement? I have rechargeable USB devices I need to charge when on the road but I have to leave my Inspiron 1750 notebook powered on.

Get with the program Dell (And others).

I'm in total love of the Thinklight on my T40p. Lights the keyboard, plus a small halo around it on the desk so you can see well enough to scribble a note, or see what you're doing inserting a DVD.

Plus it's a great way to meet chicks :P

agree about the thinkpads... great feature added since the T30 series...and feature is on my T61 also. :)

But... I do like the idea of the powered USB port from a user's point, but from an IT view it'll result in people complaining their battery doesn't last as long or other BS...

It says the USB ports get the power when the laptop is plugged into the AC adapter, so I don't think battery life should be effected by the sleep-and-charge feature.

yes, the feature isn't nearly as useful as it'd be if you could keep the USB port power when the laptop was running on battery power - when power is a concern if you have it plugged into AC already, might as well just leave it turned on (or get a separate AC-USB power adapter wall wart instead).

So it'll drain the battery - big deal, USB is 500mA max, slightly above 2.5W of power drain is a reasonable compromise for someone who specifically wants to do this.

TONS of notebooks have illuminated keyboards-including a bunch of Apple's, years before the Macbook Air came out.

Acer has this already

my acer aspire 9800 notebook has had this feature for a long time... it charges my usb devices even when it's turned off or asleep... it would even charge them from its own battery when the ac adapter isn't plugged in. it's already more than a year old. my other acer notebook, aspire 5052, slso has this feature
i thought this was already standard in most notebooks.
