The Stig poses in front of a Koenigsegg CCX

"Some say that his tears are adhesive, and that if he caught fire, he'd burn for a thousand days... all we know is, he's called the Stig."

In a rather surprising turn of events, Gran Turismo and Polyphony Digital have made it to DailyTech's news coverage two days in a row. Yesterday, DailyTech reported on Polyphony Digital's collaboration with Nissan on creating the multi-function display for the 2009 GT-R -- a 473 HP twin-turbocharged monster that will come to our shores sometime next year.

Today, Polyphony Digital and its Gran Turismo 5 (GT5) offspring are once again making news. It was announced today that episodes of the BBC's highly popular "Top Gear" automotive show will be available for download from GT5's GT TV service.
Initially, 40 episodes will be available for download on the PlayStation 3 -- hopefully, current episodes will also be available shortly after airing for eager beaver “Top Gear” fans.

"We at Polyphony are great fans of the world’s best motoring programme, Top Gear, so we’re delighted to be collaborating with BBC Worldwide to deliver Top Gear content via Gran Turismo," said Polyphony Digital President Kazunori Yamauchi.

"BBC Top Gear is the world’s number one motoring media brand and we’re thrilled to make it accessible to Gran Turismo gamers," said BBC Worldwide Director of Digital Media Simon Danker. "We continue to explore different avenues to share our content with an expanding audience, and are delighted to participate with Polyphony Digital in the launch of this exciting new opportunity."

Perhaps the icing on the cake comes in the form of another little surprise from Polyphonic Digital and BBC Worldwide -- GT5 racers will be able to dart around Top Gear's infamous track. That's right; you can queue up your sappy music or self-help tapes and do your best impression of the Stig plowing through "Gambon." Or perhaps you can do your own impression of a "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car."

Regardless, the “Top Gear” functionality added to GT5 is sure to set many hearts ablaze and should make for some interesting battles around the virtual test track.

Sure, its always great to have extra features like this, but can't they just make it a patch that's downloadable after the game is released?

I just want to play GT5!

Is the demo of the demo any good? I know I could set up a Japanese account and get it, but I prefer to wait for it to be localized for the USA.

lol, maybe.

I'm all for all these extra features, it is just so frustrating since I want this game to come out reasonably soon.

Stuff like downloadable video doesn't really add to the value of the game for me, but I guess others will appreciate it, esp in the UK.

I don't think people here in the UK really care. Its shown almost every night on Dave, so downloading it on a console doesn't make any sense.

I would appreciate it here in South Africa(if I had a PS3. I have watched every episode screened here.

They're trying to pack as much stuff on that Blu-ray disc to justify why the extra space is needed.

When a multiplat game developer says they are struggling with two issues, one of them is fitting the game onto DVD-9, it makes you think, hey, maybe it it's not needed but it would have been swell! Assassins Creed, the other problem was PS3's memory; Rockstar said the same about DVD9, both being sandbox style games.

when a respected developer NOT owned by Sony has already stated they needed blu-ray, it is needed. (It's a studio that rhymes with SHOWjima)

There are lots of people that will appreciate having everything in one place without the need to download. Lots of people also got crappy or no internet connection.

Then they wouldn't care about this feature, since it requires a pretty decent internet connection anyways.

I wasent just refering to the episodes, but the bluray as a whole. The developers can pack alot of stuff into the discs that otherwise require downloads. like maps, mods, etc

Uh, Nice name.

hamster because his name is hammond. search for top gear on youtube or alloftv, their shows are hilarious. i wonder how they are going to top crossing the channel on an outboard-powered pick-up truck, but top it they will.

Having watched some of the vids (ie, best motoring) on the prologue demo, I have to say that this is welcome news!

I mean, I would seriously pay the old PS3 price for the ability to see Top Gear episodes that weren't a year late and edited for North American commercial spots.

I remember the 1st episode of Top Gear I ever saw like it was yesterday -- Clarkson raced Mays and Hammond in a DB9 vs Public Transportation film that would lead the way to even greater challenges (Veyron vs Airplane and the American Road Trip)..

It has to be the best car show entertainment wise that's ever come along -- they serve you the meat wrapped in tasty bacon.

I may be a closet PS3 fanboy, but I'm a fully outted Top Gear fanboy!

The Top Gear "Caravan Holiday" segment is hilarious.

I'm a Canadian, and my only good source of Top Gear is thanks to the internet, as it is impossible to get it on TV here. Here's a link to a great fan site that has torrents of the show. Since it is a public paid BBC program they don't seem to care about people sharing the show on the net, and this website has a friendly relationship with Andy Wilman, the producer. They even sent Hamster a helmet after his accident that he wears in the new season. Click the box on the right side that says Top Gear...

BBC Canada carries Top Gear on Sunday evenings at 8:00pm. It's available through both Rogers and Bell (dunno about others). Scheduling is a bit odd though, sometimes the episodes seem to be only a few weeks behind the Brits, other times they're years off.

One of the only shows I'm going to miss after cancelling my cable. Last show I saw was their limousine challenge which had me rolling on the floor laughing for the entire hour!

Ya know

When I read the topic I said to myself "Yay! Top Gear & Top Gear 2 for SNES were kick ass games! Makes GT5 even better!"

LOL, I was thinking the same thing. There hasn't been a Top Gear game since Top Gear 3000.

very welcomed

i started watching top gear through joost a couple of months back, and it really is an awesome show, this is great news. last i check though, joost switched their top gear content to something like 5 min clips, what a rip, anyways, glad i'll have access to the show by other means.
I'm sure polyphony will only continue to make gt5 sweeter, making it worth the wait.

i started watching top gear through joost a couple of months back,

Pardon - but I am pretty sure it's Fifth Gear that can be found on Joost!

Fifth Gear is like a really bad executed copy of Top Gear so you really should go to YouTube or FinalGear and check out the real deal.

Sony is trying out their buy cars and tracks strategy with GT5, and something like the track in this article probably will not be in the game... it will cost you.

It's been a while since I read about it, but there are only like 7 cars and 3 tracks that come with the game, and you have to buy every other car and track you want from Sony to be able to use them. That's real money, not ingame cash.

Personally I hope the game flops so this type of 'scam' doesn't become popular with developers.

Anyone who buys that probably has a nice collection of famous bridges. ;)

Seriously though, it sounds like you have possibly confused the retail game, due Q2 2008 or thereabouts, with the allegedly soon to be released GT Prologue - a free download.

Now you too can be a 300mph fireball

That is if they work "Be Hammond in a Jet Car" into the track options.

Seriously though, I'm happy he got through the wreck without damage to body or his brilliantly white teeth and the ability to drive Top Gear's test track sounds awesome. I wonder how accurate it is compared to their own lap board?

By BZDTemp on 10/25/2007 8:18:42 AM , Rating: 2
I wonder about the track if it were to be used in a race situation since it's 8 shape without a bridge!

I'm guessing they are either gonna make it a one-car-at-a-time deal as otherwise it will be something of a demolition derby not really in the style of GT.

I've only recently started watching Top Gear...and its quickly become a mainstay in my torrent queue. Their banter is smart and funny, their car reviews are even more so. With GT5 having Top Gear's track in the game, I am that much more looking forward to getting a PS3 for this.

Some say that...

...I am the Stig. All I know is that...

...this cooperation is brilliant. What a cool idea. Now, if they include some new rumors about the Stig in the game, it'll be remembered as a classic just for that alone.
