Sony introduces "PSP Plus" feature

Kotaku reports a new feature called "PSP Plus" has been introduced for PSP games such as Resistance: Retribution. Users who own both the PSP and PlayStation 3 will be able to play PSP games using a Dual Shock 3 on a television. For this process to work, users will need to own both Resistance: Retribution, for the PSP, and Resistance 2, for the PlayStation 3. According to Kotaku, the “PSP Plus” feature will not require a firmware update for either the PSP or PS3.

The process involves plugging in an AV-output cable PSP (PSP-2000 and PSP-3000 models) and connecting the PSP to the PS3 using a USB cable, you will be able to switch on PSP Plus control through Resistance 2. Doing this adds Dual Shock 3 control support, letting you play PSP games on your television with a PS3 controller. It disables aim assist in Resistance: Retribution and lets the player alter their control layout to take advantage of the PS3 controller's extra inputs.

According to Gamasutra, Sony has also announced that PlayStation Portable owners in Japan will be able to directly access the PlayStation Store from October 15.

In the past, users needed to go through a multi-step process that involved first accessing the store through a PC or PlayStation 3 in order to download content that they could later transfer to their PSP.

No release date has been announced for the U.S. or other territories, but Sony is expected to launch the update worldwide simultaneously or near-simultaneously, as it has with the majority of its previous PSP firmware updates.

Cool Factor!

"I'm so cool 'cause I purchased two games in order to play one"

What else do you need?

That's what the ps3 version is for.

Resistance: Retribution is a different game than Resistance 2. So for someone who has Resistance: Retribution and would like to play it on the big screen, it's a nice option. However I don't think it should be necessary to own Resistance 2 to utilize that feature, that just seems... retarded.

The whole thing is retarded. If you have a PSP and a PS3, you should be able to just plug it in via USB to the PS3 and then just use your Dualshock 3 OR Sixaxis OR Dualshock 2 OR Dualshock (there are adapters) to play your PSP games on it. With the PS3's powers, you should be able to upscale it (or just come out with a firmware upgrade that just lets it possible for the PS3 to just tweak the resolution on PSP games. That way you don't waste any time with up scaling).

This is so stupid; why don't they just release a PSP with a 2nd analog stick and sticks that can be pushed down along with L1,L2,R1, and R2 buttons just like on the RetroCON?:

Stop beating around the bush with these minuscule upgrades and give us a REAL next gen mobile gaming console.

The problem with a 2nd analog stick is the overall shape of the PSP. If it had one, the PSP would be unstable in your hands and would lead to a lot of dropped PSPs.

Me. I just wish some of the Japanese only PSP items would come out elsewhere. Like the GPS or SEG.

The only benefit, is written in the latter part of the article, I think. Being able to use that same connection to enter the store directly from the PSP makes more sense.

Maybe that was the maingoal of the update and some 'ingenious' head made the DS3 'weird'-mode...

those are seperate...

the DS3 functionality is a product of the game not firmware

2 games
2 consoles
3 sets of cords
1 tv
1 controller
all to play game designed for 3 inch screen on a big screen...

(visual) Sony wringing it's hands while laughing maniacally

For the handful of games PSP has that even worthy of playing it doesn't make sense.

Just Resistance?

So does this work for all games? I'd buy a psp just so I could play FF:CC and FF:T on my PS3.

no this is a game specific feature (not firmware)

the game would have to have this feature programmed in

Imagine Nintendo could do this as well.
"NDS Plus" : Play NDS game on your HDTV with the Wii controller!

He, at that time the Nintendo is IN the controller. Probably before, now I come to think of it...

from what I gathered from the pictures and explanation on the PS Blog... this will also work on the 1000 models, just no AV-out. requires the PS3 only b/c they apparently can't just connect the DS3 through mini-mini cable

So basically, if you are a huge sony fan and already have both systems, and both games, then, and only then, you can use your PS3 to make your PSP slightly better...and play a low-res game on a high res TV.

While the end result is definitely a possible improvement over the PSP version, the upside is too little to really induce anyone to buy either system or game.

How about letting PS3 owners buy PSP games and play them directly? Now that would be something. No messy video cables, dual purchases of games (wtf do you have to have resistance 2 to qualify--maybe the software side of the communication is included with resistance 2) and perhaps the PS3 could even upscale it reasonably.

The real problem is this isn't Sony doing it but the Resistance developers. Therefore they are limited in how they can exploit the features of either system.

ROFL!
