The final version of Mozilla Thunderbird 2 has been released for users

Mozilla recently released the final version of Thunderbird 2, the latest version of Mozilla's free e-mail client.  The cross-platform e-mail program was created by the Mozilla Foundation, which uses the same project strategy with Thunderbird as with its Firefox Internet browser.

Users have been using the Thunderbird 2.0 Beta 2 version of the e-mail client for the past several months.

Thunderbird 2 users can now manage and organize e-mails in their inbox with tags, along with more efficient inbox and message searching. The new version of Thunderbird 2 is also able to be customized with add-ons.  The Thunderbird community will likely have hundreds of add-ons that users can choose from.

Mozilla hopes that tagging will make for an easier browsing and organization experience.  "Tagging initially gained popularity on blogs, photo and link-sharing sites as an intuitive way to organize online information," said Scott MacGregor, Mozilla Thunderbird's lead engineer.

Thunderbird 2 is available for Windows, Mac and Linux computers, with more than 30 different languages offered.

Users can look forward to Mozilla Thunderbird 3 sometime in 2008.

I urge current Microsoft Outlook users to at least try Thunderbird for a couple of days.  Seeing how it is free, what do you honestly have to lose?

Until they get the calendar project integrated...

I really love Thunderbird as an email client, but until they get the Calendar project (Sunbird/Lightening) into something more fleshed out and stable that can be integrated with Thunderbird, it will be not real competition to Outlook.

Outlook Express on the other hand is easily outdone by Thunderbird.

As the old Firefox phrase goes "extensions, extensions, extensions" :).

Last I heard was that users were coming up with ways of fully integrating Google Calender in to Thunderbird. Given that actually I might start checking it out, always was a little miffed that several of the Google Apps weren't fully integrated in to GMail.
