Thomson announces sale of AV operations outside of Europe and closure of European activities

The consumer electronics arena could use more competitors to help drive development of new technology and reduce prices; both of which are good for consumers. Today the consumer electronics industry has lost one manufacturer.

Thomson announced today that it has signed an agreement to sell its consumer electronics activities outside of Europe. Thomson also announced that it is in the process of closing its European audio video and accessories activities.

Audiovox Corporation will take over Thomson AV operations outside of Europe and the sale is expected to complete on December 31, 2007. Thomson sold products including DVD and MP3 players under different brands including RCA.

The sale to Audiovox also transfers the rights worldwide to the RCA brand within the AV products field. In January of 2007, Audiovox purchased from Thomson the rights to RCA brand for consumer electronics accessories.

The only portion of its existing business in Europe that Thomson plans to continue operating is its Skymaster activities in Germany.

Cash proceeds of the sale to Audiovox are expected to be slightly more than $56.7 million USD. The costs to shut down European operations are expected to be in the area of $42.5 million USD.

RCA used to be an American company. Then it became French with Thomson. So, anybody, what is it now?

I know Zenith used to be American, but now LG (South Korean) owns the brand.

Just curious, I like to keep tabs on this stuff.

Keeping tabs on all these electronic companies acquisitions is really a full time job.

The only real assumption I use is, if it was once a huge American electronics company (Westinghouse, Zenith, RCA, ect.) you can be almost certain it's now based abroad.

westinghouse electronics belongs to toshiba now, and white-westinghouse (the folks who make laundry machines) now belongs to electrolux, a swedish company. then there is another westinghouse which was set up by CBS to manage IP copyrights... it's confusing. type westinghouse into wikipedia and you'll see.

I understood that the GE line of TVs and AV electronics was under the RCA/Thompson brand as well... I also think that Symphonic is in this same boat too.
It is so hard to keep track of it all nowadays

I think Audiovox is based in New York state, so RCA becomes an American brand again, even if all of it's goods are made in China.

Yeah, aside from certain brands (like my new Canon Camera says it is made in Japan and my new LG washer says made in Korea), everything is made in China.
