The police are searching for at least three thieves responsible for stealing thousands of Xbox 360 game consoles

Around $1.9M USD worth of Microsoft Xbox 360 game consoles have been stolen from a U.K. depot center located in Lichfield, Staffordshire, England.  An initial shipment of consoles worth $1.4M  USD was stolen from a depot center.  Police later revealed that there was another theft on Thursday morning after two vehicles flagged down a truck that was carrying around $500,000 worth of Xbox consoles. 

According to U.K. police, At least three men, believed to be driving a Range Rover and Rover Saloon, were involved with the truck jacking.  Police have successfully recovered the stolen truck.  An investigation is underway to see if the two thefts are related.  

Police believe the consoles are being stolen so that they can be sold on the black market for the Christmas holiday shopping season.  The Xbox 360 retails from $386 to $579 in the UK and is a top choice for consumers, according to The Times of London.

The police have made statements to the public warning them that anyone purchasing stolen consoles could find that their warranty is no longer valid.  Also, the Staffordshire police department put out the following statement to viewers in the UK: "We are appealing for information from anyone who is offered games in suspicious circumstances, such as in a pub, at a car boot sale or off the back of a lorry."

Approximately 4,000 consoles were stolen in the heist by rough estimates.

Seriously, though, I doubt many of these will find their way onto ebay, its most likely that they'll sell them in Pubs, or in private ads and such, to avoid suspicion.

I am not being sarcastic. Are there a lot of electronic sales in Pubs over there? Or do you mean posting on a bulletin board in a Pub? I can't imagine going to a bar in Texas and someone offering me an Xbox360.

No i literally mean in a pub. Guy goes 'I've got a few Xbox360s in the van you want any?'. These people generally know each other, i.e the person buying them usually has a small shop or market stall or something, so they can shift the 'goods'. It makes sense really because it increases the distance between the thieves and the consumer, making it harder for the police to catch them.

This seriously sounds like an inside job. Otherwise, how would the thieves have known that the XBox360's were on that specific truck?

They could have just gotten exceptionally lucky, but I'm not one to believe in that big of a coincidence.

well i hope they offer leeway on a case by case basis so that people who've been duped via ebay don't get shortchanged out of a warranty. i'm guessing, though, that this statement was issued more as a deterrent for people planning to purchase the stolen consoles by other means where the customer knows the origins of the system are dubious.

In the UK it is illegal to receive stolen goods if you know or believe them to be stolen (in England this is under the Handling Stolen Goods - Section 22 Theft Act 1968) "Examples when a charge of handling stolen goods would be appropriate:

* When the accused buys goods in a public house at an absurdly low price and the origin of the property has been disguised by obscuring or removing and identification mark or serial number;"

So the law does allow for people innocently buying but doesn't allow you to "turn a blind eye" when something is obviously stolen. Also if after buying you discover that the Xbox (or goods) is stolen then it is a crime to sell the item to someone else.

The laws are fair and reasonably balanced.
