Grand Theft Auto IV to rock videogames this Tuesday

Even though it’s not the holiday season, this week will have some of the biggest releases of 2008. On the high-def console side, you have Grand Theft Auto IV – which from early impressions is already in the running for game of the year. The requisite Mario Kart iteration for Wii is already on store shelves, each packed with the free-floating Wii Wheel accessory.

I really hate how there is no PC version of GTA IV. Come on Rockstar! Maybe I will have to go buy an X-Box 360 finally.....nah

Despite being a hardcore PC gamer -- a PC snob, by some accounts -- I would much rather play this on PS3. PS3 and Xbox 360 have controllers much more conducive to this kind of game. It is not a first-person shooter. A PS3 or Xbox controller is perfect for games like this.

Now don't get me started on the console version of games like Call of Duty 4, or how mediocre I've found all the Halo games. FPS games belong on the PC. Games like GTA belong on console.

The only good thing about consoles are the controllers. Bought a PS2 to USB adapter and I am good to go w/ all the GTA titles on PC. All of them play better and have more options on PC. Now if the developers would just release them on the same dates as the consoles....

It isn't being pushed very hard by Sony (which is a huge mistake), but the PS3 can support mouse/keyboard if the developer implements it in the game. UT3 is a good example. Orange Box is not. Should be forced in RTS and FPS genres released for the system, IMO. I treat gaming as an era now, got tired of upgrading my PC, my OS, dealing with driver bugs, online cheaters, etc.

From my experiences it is far easier to utilize the 360's analog stick scheme than the PS2 scheme. I'm a mouser at heart, but the 360's stick provides:

1. Better response via less resistance and more fluid movement
2. Larger axis travel which lends to greater accuracy of movement

Just my opinion, but I own a couple of 360 controllers for the PC rather than the PS-style due to their accuracy and ease of use.

I think though that this is more preferential than anything, everyone is going to have a like/dislike of either of the two. I myself hated Xbox controllers completely until the 360 version came out. PS2 was superior to the original Xbox easy, but I think the 360's has the edge now.

I dunno about you but when I played San Andreas for the PC I realized how much easier it was to aim and move. When it came to flying I just had a joystick plugged in for that.

I also had it for the PS2 but preferred the controls of the PC version.

Have you ever played Scarface on the Wii?

Have you ever played San Andreas on the PC?

If you had, you'd quickly realize the extreme benefit of having a mouse-like pointer to be able to aim in GTA. My biggest gripe while playing it on the PS2 for years in GTA 3 and Vice City was the crappy aiming system - which really wasn't an aiming system but more like target and auto-shoot/kill. Add in the Wii controller OR a Mouse (and the Wii is completely incapable of running GTA 4, just using the controller as an example) and all of a sudden...

GTA turns into a skill-based shooter.

Wow. Locational damage based on where you aim, the ability to fire on multiple enemies at one time, prioritize targets, create desired results via aim, make decisions quickly on the fly... All of this is possible with a non-analog stick style control scheme.

I can respect your opinion, but I highly disagree that console analog sticks are more conductive to this style of game. If anything, they dramatically hinder the potential.

You're absolutely right! I was thorn between the 360 and the PS3 and what tipped the scale was the blu-ray and the connection with my PSP.

Yeah... I don't own any modern console, my last one was over 10 years ago.

The PS3 is on my radar. Also, PS3 sales have constantly been higher than the 360 the past few months since Jan... the good titles are finally out, Halo3 has come and gone... the build in Blu-Ray drive is handy. Its only $50 more than a 360 with double he HD space, built in wireless networking.

But I really want the white or gun-metal grey PS3, not the black one. grrrr.

How does Blu ray tip the scales when the game was built for the 360 & ported to the PS3? It's the same game, just runs alittle smoother on the PS3 cause you have to install the PS3 version to the hdd to offset the slower drive speed of the Blu ray drive. Seems like alot of confusion among some gamers. How does Blu ray tip the scales again?

I have read on a few sites that the PS3 allows for more items/characters/vehiles on screen at a time. The framerates a higher on the PS3. There was one site that noted a graphical difference, the PS3 has a luminesent look while the 360 has a glossy look. Neither are bad, claimed the site, but you can tell the difference.

I have no doubt GTA4 will be great, I also don't see a reason for people to compare 360vsPS3 as both will be great. I however will take advantage of the mandated install PS3 version. I know there is an option for the 360, but options usually cause problems, so I want to avoid the hastle.

I am picking the game up today after work. :) cant wait.

I agree, GTA is going to be great on both & many comparison reviews say unless you have games side by side, you won't be able to tell any signicant differences. I own both the PS3 & 360 so I have no favorites other than I bought the PS3 for exclusive games that take advantage of the cell & blu ray, & buy all multiplatform games on the 360 for the Xbox specific stuff like LIVE, community, achievements & stuff. I picked up the 360 version today but will gamefly the PS3 version to just to see the differences on my TV since I both the 360 connected via VGA & PS3 connected via HDMI on my HDTV, but no doubt GTA should be the biggest game this year. The best decidion Rockstar made was making the game available on both consoles & not limiting to one.

I can tell you right now the online experience will be better on 360 and is well worth the $60 for live, especially if your going to play with friends.

If you dont care about that though, the ps3 would probably be the better chose since obviously blu ray and wireless are included. Just make sure you check out the game libraries first, because right now imo the 360 is way ahead in that department.

Perhaps they did not want to go down the Crysis route, put it on consoles that everyone will be able to play just fine.
Remember that this GTA is like no other and will probably bring several computers to their knees, especially with the multiplayer mode (imagine 8 people all shooting rocket launchers and beating up hookers, sounds fun but will bog down systems.

I did expect GTA IV to be getting approximately 89-95 average score range. But honestly I was expecting a prettier yet same-old GTA experience. I've enjoyed all the GTA games but I haven't finished any to completion, and was not too excited about this release. GTA IV seems to buck the trend by finally offering a polished combat system and what seems to be a great online mode, despite the fact that sales would not have suffered one bit had they not included it.

Achievements and DLC would sway me towards the 360 version, but either way I congratulate Rockstar on tearing up Metacritic and releasing what reviewers are saying is the best game of this console generation thus far.

I'm excited about the possibility of entire downloadable cities in the 360 version. It would be awesome to be able to drive from one to the next.

Picked up my copy at 10:05 this morning at Circuit City. Even got a free $10 gift card that I used to pick up the Collector's Edition of Top Gun which was on sale. A true classic.

I'm still deciding which version to get (360 or PS3). It's a tough one for me.

Over the last few hours I've read quite a few reviews and videos and the consensus so far breaks it down as follows:

Graphics: It appears somewhat superior on the PS3. No frame drops or frame popping at all and generally very fluid. Also more Anti-Aliasing applied on the PS3 version. IGN has a head to head and it finally got uploaded to Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqDVLa2bnLQ)

Control: About the same except for the sixaxis showing a positive during certain parts of the game, such as flying the heli and weapon reloading.

Online: 360 there for sure unless most of your friends are PS3 users.

I've played all the previous GTAs offline so I'm not sure if the online is critical to me but then again, it might just be the difference this time around.

Yah, choice was tough for me too. I would have liked the better graphics of the PS3 and the downloadable content, but MS made a very shrewd move buying the exclusive rights. When I first heard that I thought $50M just for exclusive downloadable content rights was obscene, but I think they'll make a lot of sales based on that.

I'll probably end up buying the 360 version just due to the DC (and I am a person that has no bought a single download for any of the three consoles).

PS3 is at 630p, compared the the 360's 720p ( www.eurogamer.net ). They're both pretty much the same after that. 360 smoother with more accurate colours, the ps3 has a little less popup thanks to the mandatory install.

Control - over at @ www.kotaku.com you can see some feedback on the sixaxis controls basically ruining those sections of the game. And how anyone can (in reference to above) prefer the ps-design of controller over the 360's ergonomic lines is a mystery to me.

Online - choose the system your friends are on.

Yes, yes that seems like a very accurate, balanced comparison of the two versions...if your Steve Balmer.

The PS3 version runs far smoother at the end of the day with hardly any framerate drops compared to the 360 version which can get choppy. I found the framerate changes on GTA3 ruined the games for me making them remind me that they were running on ancient hardware, so this would definitely make me go for the PS3 version over anything else.

Colours are different on the 360 version (notice not necessarily *better* but different) and the fact that you're referencing feedback in the comments section of Kotaku allows you to pretty much pick and choose an opinion to support.

The 360's clearly better than the dire original Xbox's design is ok but nothing special as far as controllers go. If they'd concentrated more on getting a proper working d-pad rather than ergonomics then I might like it more...How can so many companies still get dpad's wrong when Nintendo perfected it back when the SNES came out!! Dreamcast (minor flaws, too squishy), PSP (just pure garbage with varying responsiveness) ps1, ps2, ps3 (the dpad is crap for fighting games, pure and simple) Xbox 1, xbox 360, they all either suck in functionality or suck in terms of positioning!!!

I'm sure the 6-axis controls absolutely ruin GTA4, it must just be so unplayable... Ignoring the fact that everybody knows the game was developed for the PS3 from the ground up, this is just blatant fanboi-ism and if you're used to a style of controller you'll probably grow to prefer it.

As somebody else here noted, I've never played a GTA game for more than a few days before I got bored/motion sick and never finished one, so DLC is not really of interest to me, i'll just get the version which runs better, i.e. the PS3 version. The fact that the console running it will do said task nearly silently is also important to me; and I certainly don't use Xbox Live aka "yet another subscription service which should be free"

I was torn too. I ended up getting the 360 version because of DLC and I'm an achievement whore at the moment. I may end up renting or getting the PS3 version somewhere down the road.

I predict very low sales for "Iron Man".

I think it's brilliant: "No, the slow sales of the Iron Man game weren't due to it being bad, it was just due to competition from GTA IV. Yeah, that's it!"

Of course, the real reason it was released this week was because of the movie...

I figured you DTers would get a kick out of this:

We have some wonderful examples of "hardcore" gamers here in San Diego. This one guy was so desperate to get his hands on GTA IV, that he walked into a local GameStop sprayed mace on the employees and ran off with 2 or 3 copies of the game.
And guess what he decides to do right after robbing the store? He heads over to a nice Japansese restaurant to celebrate his "purchase", where the police caught him right away.

Wow, what a tool.
