In the coming weeks and months we will witness as Intel morphs into a slightly different company. I believe that the “good old boy” days are gone…

A Humbling Experience

Gone are the days when Intel focused on market share dominance by doing whatever they could to keep their competition at bay. Gone are the days when Intel started a price war for the sake of crushing their competition and assuming market dominance. Gone are the days when Intel publicly ignores they even have competition.

In the coming weeks Intel will lay off a significant chunk of staff while working to transform themselves into the efficient machine they should have been a few years ago. Maybe Mr. Paul Otinelli hasn’t had enough time in the saddle, and perhaps people will look at his legacy as the one who turned them around before it was too late – or maybe not. From where I am sitting I see Intel making some positive moves. They should thank AMD for poking them in the eye and beating them with a stick – it was a humbling experience.

The “new” AMD has done everything they can to turn their company into something spectacular, and it’s obvious that Intel is learning from them. It’s more likely than not that over the long term Intel will drop revenues and increase margins – something I admire in any business.

AMD will continue to increase their market share in certain segments – even in light of Intel’s recent epiphany. Although they will have to submit on the high end desktop space - they can no longer be the 100% owner of this space. The majority of their share gains will come from those who don't currently sell AMD. From here on in AMD will win business from companies who were once thought unlikely to adopt AMD technology. AMD, under Hector Ruiz, has officially cracked into the mainstream. Considering AMD is dwarfed ....

I have to say the launch of Conroe marks the first time in many years that I've been excited by an Intel release. Even back in the early days when Intel was definitively the market leader in performance at least AMD was there to offer the best bang for your buck comparitively speaking. If Intel seems as poised to really make an impact as they seem to be at such a great pricing structure, AMD may find itself in a difficult position to offer up something attractive enough to sway buyers to their camp. Competition benefits the consumer most, bring it on guys!
