SEGA and EA announce the first two 1080p games for Microsoft's console

SEGA has  announced that Virtua Tennis 3 on the Xbox 360 will support 1080p graphics, making it one of the first games to support the unlocked resolution. The PS3 version of the game will also support 1080p.

“We’re thrilled to be able to say that Virtua Tennis 3 will be coming to Xbox 360, showcasing an online experience with Xbox Live that you won’t find on any other systems and spectacular 1080p graphics,” said George Peckham, general manager, global third party publishing for the Interactive Entertainment Business, Microsoft. “Fun and easy to pick up and play, Sega is hitting another ace with Virtua Tennis 3.”

EA has followed SEGA’s announcement by revealing to Gamasutra that its upcoming NBA Street Homecourt will also be supporting 1080p. EA’s game will be shipping on February 20, a full month before SEGA’s sports title, giving it the honor of having the first 1080p Xbox 360 game.

Although both Sony and Microsoft have traded fightin’ words over the relevancy of 1080p for this gaming generation, it appears that the proof of the high-def pudding is in the eating.

Err wait... I didn't think the 360 could output 1080p in it's current form. Did I miss something? The component cable only outputs at 1080i as it's highest resolution and last I checked, the 360 didn't have a hardware upscaler to 1080p. With no HDMI yet, component is the best picture you can get right now (VGA cable not withstanding).

That was the whole point of the leaked HDMI-enabled Xbox 360 from a little while back.

From Wikipedia:

quote:
Component video is capable of producing signals such as 480i, 480p, 576i, 576p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p.

And I'm pretty sure going from interlaced to progressive is pretty easy to do in software. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

While true, most TV's will not accept a 1080p signal over component, since the (mis)understanding of most manufacturers was that all 1080p content would require HDCP.
...which sucks

My 360 is outputting 1080p to my TV over component. Trust me, it's possible. The problem comes when playing movies. They restrict 1080p to VGA or HDMI so my 360 will let me watch HD-DVDs from at 1080i and DVDs at 480p (VGA users can watch DVDs at up to 1080i, I believe).

Neither the Xbox360 nor the PS3 have the power to push 1080p with any kind of complex 3D rendering. For that you need a PC with a real graphics card. For example, could either run Oblivion in high detail at 1920x1080 with anti-aliasing and AF? Highly doubt it.

Sorry, these consoles are already behind the curve compared to PC, as is always the case.

Gotta second. If there were no big name console exclusive games I think they would have dropped significantly in recent years. PC will always win out in power and versitility, although if you want real power they do cost more. Being mainly PC gamer I really hope consoles die out, although party consoles like Wii never really will.

It's sad to miss out on some good titles, but I sadly don't have enough money to throw at consoles and PC upgrades.

Trust me, no console comes anywhere near Supreme Commander demo with max settings in true 1080 on my 40inch LCD.

Just my opinion anyway, don't mean to step on any hardcore console toes.

I totally agree!

The first thought in my mind when I saw the title was:
so what??

I've already been gaming on my PC with much higher resolutions than 1080p for many years now.

Although I must admit Nintendo was great to grow up with but it doesn't makes sense to buy a console when you have a good pc.

UNLESS you're totally not into computers and don't care for solving problems that show up when using a PC for more than writing documents.

I downloaded the NBA demo on XBL tonight and the player models and textures are pretty low, and there's really not much going on in the scene, which is probably why there's room for the extra fillrate to 1080p. That said, the game rarely ever zooms in so that you can see that much detail on Iverson's ghastly face. He's also on the Nuggets now, so I guess that screenshot is a little outdated.
