The first flexible display to roll out the red carpet
Telecom Italia and Polymer Vision announced yesterday that they have agreed to bring together mobile technologies with the new rollable display industry. The two companies are planning their launch of the new rollable mobile device to the 2007 market.
The newly developed terminal will be, for the first time, introduced at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona starting February 12. The design is said to follow a pattern similar to the rollable display concept shown at the IFA Consumer Electronics Trade Fair in Berlin.
The display on the terminal extends up to 5 inches with 16 levels of grey and can be rolled up and put away due to a flexible polymer based display material. They display is said to have the largest screen of the devices form factor and will have a high contrast ratio along with high reflectivity. This technology seems to trail the new development of flexible electronics and its functionality in paper-like electronic displays.
The mobile based terminal is said to run on the TIM's mobile network with a regular SIM card. It will also have a maximum internal storage capacity of 4 Gigabytes in the first models. According to the press release, "the device will permit instant access to personalized data, e-mail,
news, information feeds and location sensitive maps wherever and
whenever." The features are made possible through a combination of cellular (EDGE/UMTS) and broadcast (DVB-H IP data-casting) mobile functionalities. The terminal will also come with a mini-USB slot standard for PC connection.
The companies also claim that the rollable display will be able to download and play music, audio books, and audio podcasts. It features a single-handed navigation control with a touch sensitive LED user interface. Also the companies claim an amazing 10 day average usage time battery life between charges.
Future designs include color and moving image capabilities.
