The popularity and wider availability of wireless Internet has more users surfing the web on the go

A survey done by the Pew Internet & American Life Project reports that around one-third of U.S. Internet users have tried using wireless Internet at least once before.  Around 34 percent of Internet users used a wireless connection, including 27 percent who used a wireless connection in a location other than at home or the workplace.  The 34 percent number is higher than the February 2004 number that reported around 22 percent of Internet users claimed to have used wireless Internet.

The survey also reported that 20 percent of users have wireless networks in their home, which is double the number that was reported in January 2005.

It was also discovered that people with wireless Internet service also check their e-mail more than people with wired broadband users -- 72 percent compared to 63 percent.

As the popularity of wireless Internet continues to rise, including entire cities attempting to go wireless, the number of people who are using -- or have tried wireless Internet -- should continue to rise.  People are also increasingly taking advantage of wireless Internet while doing tasks such as sitting in the doctor's or dentist's office waiting for appointment time.  More people are also using the Internet via a mobile phone, with the number being as high as one in four.

Internet isnt Networking

Wireless INTERNET is not wireless NETWORKING . I see this misnomer everywhere and its driving me absolutely insane, and its already causing tons of confusion in the marketplace. WISP (like DigitalPath) and 802.11x are not the same thing.

totally agree ... i had to reread the article above to find out exactly what they're talking about (does wireless 'internet' include both using routers with 802.11xyx AND wireless internet like 3G?)

Good to see the tech being adopted, but the wireless on campus aggravates the crap out of me, I always use wired in my dorm. It's only sometimes that we get dropped, but it's always slower in transfer speeds and responsiveness.

Hmm, my friend has wireless internet and having seen it in action it is amazing. The speed is amazing (56Mbps). If only it wasn't so expensive in my area... I think this is a very interesting technology which must greatly benefit laptop users.

I access the internet wirelessly as much as I can. Hell, if you get anywhere near a residential area with a wi-fi capable laptop, you can usually find lots of completely open networks to use. And you can always find a Panera Bread or Atlanta Bread Company and just sit in their parking lot and check your e mail.

I do this because then by the time I get home at the end of the day, I can use my regular PC to game and I'm already all caught up on all my e mails. It's a beautiful thing.
