Another study reports it may be healthier to wear no shoes while running

U.S. researchers published a new study in the journal Nature that indicates runners who run barefoot put less stress on the body than regular shoes.

"People who don't wear shoes when they run have an astonishingly different stride," said Daniel Lieberman, Harvard University researcher, in a statement.  "By landing on the middle or front of the foot, barefoot runners have almost no  impact collision, much less than most shod runners generate when they heel-strike."

Specifically, researchers analyzed the foot strikes and running strides of runners in the United States and Kenya, using high-speed cameras, scales and 3D motion analysis.  Each participant ran at least 12.4 miles per week, with comparisons of runners who always wore shoes and those who did not.

They looked for the amount of impact barefoot runners generated by landing heel-first and forefoot-first, while runners with shoes had heel-first impact measured.

Barefoot runners are less likely to be injured because they land on their forefoot and mid-foot, as opposed to runners with shoes more likely to land on their heels.  The increased impact caused increased torque on the hip and knees, with a higher likelihood of tibial stress fractures and plantar fasciitis.

"So it's like someone hitting you on the heel with a hammer, about 1 1/2 to 3 times your body weight," Lieberman noted when runners land and heel-strike.

Running barefoot may have worked during testing, but obviously isn't feasible in most places in the United States.  The sidewalks and streets are littered with shards of glass, trash and other debris that could potentially cause injuries to runners.  Some tracks have signs up telling runners to wear footwear while on the track.

Vibram fivefinger shoes (VFFs) have increased in popularity over the past 12 months, with supports noting how much more comfortable, natural the VFFs feel when compared to regular running shoes.

Stress Fracture
By Morphine06 on 1/28/2010 6:30:48 PM , Rating: 5
My wife runs on the treadmill almost daily. She developed a stress fracture that took quite a while to heal. She did some research and started running barefoot. She never had an issue again.

Strange article to find on DT...

Still quite interesting.
I noticed when i run barefoot there is less stress on my foot.
Mostly because I run on the front of my foot.

Yea, that is what the article says :)

Anyway, hasn't this been widely known for a long time now? I remember hearing about this when I was a kid 20 years ago. Now all I have to do is find someplace to actually run barefoot, avoiding broken glass and whatever else is out there.

If you run enough, you won't have to worry about glass because you'll have nice thick calluses. :)

the beach works and the sand makes you lose more energy so you get more out of running less. But I guess a lot of beaches are not clean now days either. Depends where you live I suppose. Some of ours here are pretty nice.

You know what bothers me more? That people run using the heels of their feet when wearing footwear. I've ran a lot and the front half of my feet is definitely where I derive impulse from. The higher concentration of spikes in the front of my cleats indicates that this is an expected thing.

Most people land on their heel and then roll from heel to toe, pushing off of the ground with their forefoot. I would think that spikes are intended to give you traction when pushing off, and not as much for landing.

Most people do land that way. That does not mean they should be landing that way.

Spikes are also on the heel so it's not like landing on them is an issue. Perhaps the reason I'm considered to be fairly speedy is because my technique was naturally better.

You mean the barefoot is already made to work well and pretty much optimally without artificial gear? shocking or something, guess mother nature does know what she is doing.

Nature only knows best when it is pretty. That's why we fight forest fires and interfere with natural population cycles of the cutest animals.

RE: Stress Fracture
By Spivonious on 1/29/2010 9:37:00 AM , Rating: 2
Since most forest fires are started by human carelessness, I can definitely see why we fight them.

RE: Stress Fracture
By Denigrate on 1/29/2010 10:43:57 AM , Rating: 5
Not quite true. Most forest fires are caused because man artificially keeps the natural cycles of fire from burning off underbrush on a regular basis. Lightning strikes cause as many fires as anything else.

RE: Stress Fracture
By geddarkstorm on 1/29/2010 4:09:44 PM , Rating: 2
Though, a lot of forest fire fighting begins only once the fire appears to be ready to rip through our towns. I don't think I'm going to complain about that.

No kidding, that's exactly what I think every time I hear this. I wish I could run for excercise but unfortunately I've had knee and ankle injuries that make it tough.

Have her try a stationary bike instead. Zero impact on your feet, shins, knees, etc. It just works out your leg muscles and cardio.

This guy runs around the area where I live, all times of the year. You always do a double take when you see a guy running barefoot when there's snow on the ground.

Surprised that no one mentioned these yet (or a variety of other competing products): http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/products/index.cf...

So far I've only see one person ever to wear these, and have no idea of their comfort level. Still interesting, though.

Just another "duh" study. I've known this for a long time, and when I run, when I go up stairs, when I'm carrying heavy loads, I keep to the front of my feet. Of course, my calves are almost the size of my thighs.
