ITunes U still growing in popularity, though iPhone course from Stanford is a big hit

Even though the main Apple iTunes store is extremely popular, the Cupertino-based company has seen a growing interest in its iTunes U educational lectures and lessons section.

The Stanford University iPhone Application Programming CS193P class, a class hosted twice each week since April 1, has reached the 1 million total download mark in just seven weeks.

"I had a feeling this class would be popular but the level of popularity is surprising," Stanford graduate student Troy Brant said during a recent interview.

"This is the fastest any course on iTunes U has reached one million downloads," said Jason Ediger, Apple iTunes U and Mobile Learning director.  "ITunes U has proven to be a very effective and popular way to share this course with anyone interested in creating iPhone apps."

Stanford has around 100 courses currently available through iTunes U, though the popularity of iPhone development has made the course especially popular among iTunes users.  The official Stanford on iTunes U channel is available here.

Instead of focusing on the teacher lecturing for the entire class, the Stanford programming offering seems to be more focused on letting students share their ideas with one another.  Furthermore, offering the course through iTunes U lets the students get feedback from developers around the world.

Although it's not surprising an iPhone class would be popular, Apple continually reminds iTunes users that there are thousands of hours of other quality content available through iTunes U.  Look for Apple to try and get more college students to begin looking for course material available through the free iTunes store.

The App store has been a popular destination for programmers and students looking to gain experience with the possibility of cashing in big.
