Tells T-Mobile customers to "get over here!"

Sprint hasn't been too happy about the proposed AT&T Mobility takeover of T-Mobile USA, and its been quite vocal about that. Now, the nation's third-largest wireless carrier is putting its money where its mouth is, in the form of a $125 credit to lure subscribers from other carriers.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the company is offering the credit to anyone that switches from another carrier to a Sprint smartphone plan. Non-smartphone customers receive a credit, as well, but only in the amount of $50. Business customers switching over receive a $175 credit. 

According to the report, Sprint is specifically targeting current T-Mobile customers who are unsure about their chosen carrier's future. The credit is designed to help early termination fees involved with breaking a contract. The credit comes as a lump sum that appears on a new customer's second bill.

"We recognize there's a little bit of uncertainty in the marketplace, especially for T-Mobile customers," Sprint spokesman Scott Sloat told WSJ.

Analysts were mixed on the promotion's impact. Some warned that it could cut into Sprint's short-term profitability because of higher customer acquisition costs. It could also spur similar offers from rivals, wiping out Sprint's advantage and making the two-year contract temporarily moot, but that is unlikely to happen.

Others were more upbeat. "We view it as a smart and aggressive maneuver to take advantage of what we characterize as T-Mobile's 'lame duck' carrier status," Standard & Poor's Analyst James Moorman told WSJ.

While T-Mobile is certainly the primary target, analysts said the offer could entice lower-end AT&T and Verizon subscribers, as well as MetroPCS and Leap Wireless customers.

The offer runs through June 23.

I have about three months left on my AT&T contract. This might be pretty cool. Only problem is that it's hard to get a Sprint signal in town, even when standing in front of the Sprint Center arena.

My wife and I just moved and we get almost zero Sprint coverage inside our new house. I called Sprint and they sent me a free Airave (femtocell) that gives me a personal cell tower over my Comcast connection. Five bars in the basement, all is well!

Nice! We have decent Sprint coverage around my area (at least my Kindle gets good signal) but there are a lot of dead spots around town. I'm getting sick of AT&T and their recent tactics, and have been flat out robbed by Verizon when they reset my contract after one call to customer service, so my only alternative would be Sprint.

The only problem is that I'd have to pay for a new smartphone and the $325 early term fee to AT&T. I just got my current Captivate in August. With those together, we're talking about $600. I'm going to have to tough it out for about a year before switching, but I will definitely be switching. AT&T is just getting too aggressive at robbing their own customers.

A lot depends on the Phone, home, case, surroundings, etc.

My neighbor 5 houses away has sprint and gets dropouts while my wife and I have Sprint and have no issues.

Haven't had any issue on Sprint its been solid for us in our travels. I'm in the Charlotte and north Charlotte areas if that helps anyone. Wife went to Florida along all major highways and had no issues. Haven't had a dropped call yet.

Wife has a Samsung Epic 4g Android, and Im using an HTC Arrive Windows 7.

A lot depends on the Phone, home, case, surroundings, etc.

Even depends on the weather, during Thunderstorms signal can get degraded a fair bit due to the electrical disturbances in the air.

Without the Airave, we get no signal during storms.

I just have to add that I've been with Sprint since 199...6? and they've never treated me poorly. I have my complaints from time to time, but nothing original compared to other carriers.

Sprinter User in the LA area

I've owned a Sprint Epic 4G for about 7 months now and I have to say that I've received better coverage than I did on my old T-Mobile G1. I'm amazed at the amount of 4G coverage in LA county although much more limited outside of it. Definitely a great city service though but I get unlimited roaming on Verizon's network when my sprint was out.

Driving up to the mountains I got better service than my friend's AT&T iPhone....

Well, if you live in the Seattle area your experience won't be the same. I also have an Epic 4g and my GF has the EVO, we get 1-2 bars everywhere I go it seems. Dramatically worse than T-Mobile (which I switched from) or Verizon (I "force" roaming a lot).

But, with all the money they throw at you to switch it still might be a good idea, lol. I will say that while overall coverage is poor and 4g is incredibly spotty, I always seem to have at least some service (unlike T-Mobile which had complete dead spots in weird areas).

They were doing this earlier in the year when I was looking for a new phone, but they took it down then. I was sad, and then they brought it back!

Note that this credit applies to ANY number you port over, regardless of carrier. This credit can ALSO be applied to existing plans if you add a new line, which is what I did this past Saturday.

Just wanted to point out because I am actually switching partly because of this. But it shows up half on the first bill and half on the second bill after sixty days of service.
