The date as it appears in the official trailer  (Source: EA)
The long-awaited Spore gets a date

One of the most anticipated games in PC gaming history sat in an eternity of development without a known release date, up until today. Finally revealed through a special trailer on the official Spore website is official release date of Maxis’ latest innovation.

Stated simply in the last few seconds of the video is that Spore will be available at retailers worldwide the weekend of September 7, 2008. Spore gives players the ability to create and evolve life, establish tribes, build civilizations, sculpt entire worlds and explore a universe created by other gamers using a variety of tools.

“The wait is almost over,” said Maxis Chief Designer Will Wright. “We're in our final stages of testing and polish with Spore, and the team at Maxis can't wait to see the cosmos of content created by the community later this year.”

Wright also sent out a note to subscribers of the Spore newsletters, and promised more information coming soon. “While we finish up the game over the next few months, we'll be sharing more information with you and other fans. As a newsletter subscriber, you'll be among the first to get new Spore information, screenshots, videos and other cool features from the Spore team. Check out our launch date teaser, and of course you can visit Spore.com for updates anytime,” Wright wrote.

Spore will launch for the PC, Macintosh, Nintendo DS and mobile phones.

I know I may be a little early, but I'm going to say this will be the game of the year.

Yes....because graphics are the only thing to rate on a game...

Seriously. Get off the graphics kick. I'd rather have graphics from 3-4 years ago if it meant awesome gameplay.

I'm about to go play StarCraft with some of the guys, so, in other words, I agree.

Oh, and this is one of my most favorite games of all time:

They don't have a screenshot there, but think Microsoft Excel meets 4X space strategy. Graphics? I laugh at graphics.

I thought the same thing as well. Graphics are not everything. To bad Stars! SuperNova never made it.

I think people need to get off the Gameplay only kick.

whats wrong with both?

COD4 had good/decent gameplay, but the graphics in the game made it really shine.

good graphics wont make a game. But graphics can make a good game great.

And Spore doesn't look good in your opinion? No, it doesn't have realistic graphics, but the cartoony style gives it a playful charm that really suits a game that, let's face it, isn't exactly a 100% realistic simulator. I think it looks awesome.

WoW has Gameplay? I thought the community and the people were what made the game interesting.

I agree I've been looking forward to spore for quite some time, as far as graphics go - I've concluded the more you rate a game solely on graphics indicates the younger you are or at the very least shows you haven't been into the computer/console gaming hobby for very long.

Great graphics does NOT make a great game. Btw, for those talking about WoW graphics - I think its fine.

Soldier of Fortune 2? or is there another SoF2.. This game is nothing like soldier of fortune, nor is it a first person shooter.

Did you honestly just say this looks like a SoF2 clone? Spore and SoF2 aren't even in the same genre of games. Spore doesn't even have humans, unless you make one.

I guess this is just another case of someone posting without actually reading the subject material.
