The date as it appears in the official trailer  (Source: EA)
The long-awaited Spore gets a date

One of the most anticipated games in PC gaming history sat in an eternity of development without a known release date, up until today. Finally revealed through a special trailer on the official Spore website is official release date of Maxis’ latest innovation.

Stated simply in the last few seconds of the video is that Spore will be available at retailers worldwide the weekend of September 7, 2008. Spore gives players the ability to create and evolve life, establish tribes, build civilizations, sculpt entire worlds and explore a universe created by other gamers using a variety of tools.

“The wait is almost over,” said Maxis Chief Designer Will Wright. “We're in our final stages of testing and polish with Spore, and the team at Maxis can't wait to see the cosmos of content created by the community later this year.”

Wright also sent out a note to subscribers of the Spore newsletters, and promised more information coming soon. “While we finish up the game over the next few months, we'll be sharing more information with you and other fans. As a newsletter subscriber, you'll be among the first to get new Spore information, screenshots, videos and other cool features from the Spore team. Check out our launch date teaser, and of course you can visit Spore.com for updates anytime,” Wright wrote.

Spore will launch for the PC, Macintosh, Nintendo DS and mobile phones.

A little early?

I know I may be a little early, but I'm going to say this will be the game of the year.

Yes....because graphics are the only thing to rate on a game...

Seriously. Get off the graphics kick. I'd rather have graphics from 3-4 years ago if it meant awesome gameplay.

I'm about to go play StarCraft with some of the guys, so, in other words, I agree.

Oh, and this is one of my most favorite games of all time:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stars%21

They don't have a screenshot there, but think Microsoft Excel meets 4X space strategy. Graphics? I laugh at graphics.

I thought the same thing as well. Graphics are not everything. To bad Stars! SuperNova never made it.

I think people need to get off the Gameplay only kick.

whats wrong with both?

COD4 had good/decent gameplay, but the graphics in the game made it really shine.

good graphics wont make a game. But graphics can make a good game great.

And Spore doesn't look good in your opinion? No, it doesn't have realistic graphics, but the cartoony style gives it a playful charm that really suits a game that, let's face it, isn't exactly a 100% realistic simulator. I think it looks awesome.

WoW has Gameplay? I thought the community and the people were what made the game interesting.

I agree I've been looking forward to spore for quite some time, as far as graphics go - I've concluded the more you rate a game solely on graphics indicates the younger you are or at the very least shows you haven't been into the computer/console gaming hobby for very long.

Great graphics does NOT make a great game. Btw, for those talking about WoW graphics - I think its fine.

Soldier of Fortune 2? or is there another SoF2.. This game is nothing like soldier of fortune, nor is it a first person shooter.

RE: A little early?
By SlipDizzy on 2/12/2008 5:47:27 PM , Rating: 2
Did you honestly just say this looks like a SoF2 clone? Spore and SoF2 aren't even in the same genre of games. Spore doesn't even have humans, unless you make one.

I guess this is just another case of someone posting without actually reading the subject material.

RE: A little early?
By Orbs on 2/13/2008 1:52:16 PM , Rating: 2
This was a joke, people :). It was in response to all the hype Spore is getting. There was a time, shortly after SoF2, when many games got hype for being ultra-gory and when they turned out to be less-than-fun, people would dismiss them as SoF2 clones to combat the hype.

The game looks great. Clearly not a SoF2 clone.

i am and about more then half the people on here.

It is supposed to be the new simcity of our era (in terms of revolution, not style of gameplay) and i've seen the trailers and i was drooling. I saw the trailer first about 2 years in high school and its been the top game on my list ever since.

and why would you post about a game you arent interested in? seems like a waste of time

RE: A little early?
By TSS on 2/13/2008 9:38:21 AM , Rating: 2
because posting about a game that you dislike is a much better way to spend time then actually playing the games you do like.

it's the way of the internet.

i for one, am anticipating this game. but i do hope there's a demo or something to try it out. i do want to buy this game, but as hellgate:london showed, even top titles can be disappointing these days. yes the guy has created the sims, but that game also has 20 odd expansion packs that aren't all that different from each other. i wonder if the gameplay is really revolutionary, or just another tried and true but boringly old techniques, just alot of them slapped together.

I'd suggest anyone who has played and enjoyed any of Will Wright's games in the past. Personally, I'm not that interested in this game since I currently "don't get it". However, if they release a good demo of it then I'll certainly give it a try and maybe then it'll all make sense. These days I tend to try and avoid previews and other such articles since what we expect often turns out not to be what is delivered and so I'd rather get excited about the real thing.

I believe they've expanded hell to include a level where all you do is walk into Walmarts and buy EA games.

Also, I had this nightmare once where EA had bought the CnC franchise and was making Renegade II...

Oh. My. God.

I thought the release date was replaned to 2009 after the last years announcement. I rather have a later release then being disappointed now. Anyway its almost a week later and still dont see anything in stores.

RE: Rushed?

I'm pretty sure the delay that you mentioned was into EA's fiscal year 2009, not the 2009 calendar year... so far EA has been pretty good at letting Will Wright take whatever time he needs to get the game done.

If it was being rushed, and EA was impatient with Wright, I'm pretty sure we would have seen the game (in an abysmally rough form) two or three years ago.

That tells you just how cutting edge the graphics are...

RE: Mac Support!
By kelmon on 2/13/2008 6:56:08 AM , Rating: 2
Agreed, although I believe this is due to Transgaming's Cider technology that translates DirectX games into Mac OpenGL ones rather than a native version of the game. I'll wait to see what this results in before I get excited but the impressions so far of EA's other titles isn't great and I'm not expecting a Blizzard-style of release. However, I am at least glad that they are making the effort.

Who cares?
By GhandiInstinct on 2/12/2008 4:46:46 PM , Rating: 2
He built too much hype too early and delayed the game too long.

After finding out the game doesn't provide the depth of creativity I once thought, as there is a lot of pre-made content in the game that can't be changed.

I've lost almost all interest given the game's delay, as there are a lot better games out now and in the coming months to keep me distracted and avoid Spore.

P.S. You'd think given all this time they'd be able to make the multi-player synchronous.

By borismkv on 2/12/2008 4:47:19 PM , Rating: 2
Now that we have an initial release date, it's time for that constant changing of release dates that signals the game's release in another couple years.

It's like getting called into the doctor's office only to be stuck waiting another hour for the doctor to show up.

Phones?

How will this translate to mobile phone platforms? Is it going to be a way of checking in on your developing universe when you are away from your computer? or will phones actually run the "full game"?

I'm sure it'll be lucky to make it out by Christmas.

It looks like Spore will be launched on September 5th, 2008 in other countries, according to the promo video in Spore UK and Brazil.

The launch in the US will come 2 days later. Maybe we should change the post title to "Spore to Break Out in the US on September 7th".
