Sony VAIO G to get 32GB SSD option to replace the 40GB HDD

Sony is no stranger to solid-state discs when it comes to their mobile products. The company already includes a 16GB SSD with its VAIO UX90 UMPC. Sony is now adding an SSD option to its featherweight VAIO G ultra-portable notebook.

The latest Sony VAIO G forgoes the traditional 40GB HDD and instead uses a 32GB SSD (manufacturer unknown). The weight of the notebook drops from an already remarkable 1.97 pounds to 1.89 pounds. Battery life is also extended 30 minutes bringing average run time to 6.5 hours with the standard battery and 13 hours with the extended battery.

The Sony VAIO G features a carbon fiber shell, 12.1" XGA screen an Intel 945GMS Express chipset and is available with Celeron M, and ULV Core Solo processors. Other niceties include 802.11a/b/g wireless, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, PCMCIA slot, multi-card media reader and a fingerprint reader.

When the Sony VAIO G was first announced in November for the Japanese market, prices ranged $1,800 USD to $2,100 USD. The SSD option will set you back an additional $545 USD.

What more can you ask for, SSD, 1.89lbs weight and 13 hrs of battery life! Of course the extended battery will add a little extra weight, but 6.5 hrs with the standard battery is NICE!

It is pretty amazing. The only downside is that with 32GB you're probably left with around 15GB free after formatting and Vista. Hopefully they'll still offer XP Pro.

And so begins the SSD onslaught!

I am not sure what Sony is doing as far as operating systems go but I was looking at a new Dell for my girlfriend to buy ... ALL VISTA. Thanks for shoving Vista down my throat Dell.

There are very few new units preloaded with XP. My guess is that by May you won't see any. They'll all have Vista.

Of course, Dell's business/corporate notebooks and desktops will have XP for a long time with the option to select Vista. My company just recently upgraded to XP and the critical operational machines just been upgraded to 2000.

We won't see Vista at work for quite a few years.

Looks like the extended battery adds about .3 lbs.

Standard Battery, 180g.

Haha, it is a good system, just they rape your computer with software you're forced to uninstall

But that's true with most vendors, they hijack it with all kind of useless software. But those software are for the less computer-literate people, so they "believe" the computer has more functions, when really between the more computer literate people, feels more like a violation and invasion of privacy.

I would love this computer, finally, featherweight and battery life.

What's more important then all battery life stuff and whatnot is the fact that someone is actually adopting SSD now. Hopefully this will drive down prices for larger scale drives.

You forgot to mention all of the ads and useless crap that sony installs on their systems.

It took me 30 minutes to clear everything off my grandfather's $2500 laptop. You would think that after paying a 20% premium for the brand that they would atleast give you a good system. Nope.

Now this is truly a perfect portable notebook...not like the the other laptops we ppl are using(except for some)...which are bulky and sucks up battery completely before even the 'login' appears......Correct me if im wrong...but according to what ive heard ...data transfers are more faster on SSD's than common hard disks......! thing is for sure im seriously gonna buy this thing....its expensive but i think its worth the money(i guess).

Now THIS is a laptop. The whole purpose of a laptop is portability first and foremost. At less than 2 lbs this thing is definitely portable and probably sufficiently fast for most users.

I want one.

12.1 XGA screen is for people who can't see well...XGA resolution should be phased out by WXGA. I could never comfortably work with such a low resolution.
They should've put this option in the 11.1 widescreen TX series.
