Sony won by nearly 30,000 sales

Sony's PlayStation 4 pulled out another monthy sales win over Microsoft's Xbox One, although the gap is starting to narrow.
According to Xbox Wire, Microsoft sold 258,000 Xbox One consoles for the month of February. However, Sony sold around 287,000 PlayStation 4s according to market researchers NPD Group.
Overall hardware sales rose 42 percent year over year and 44 percent month over month. The top-selling games for February were "Call of Duty: Ghosts," "The Lego Movie Videogame," "NBA 2K14," "Thief" and "Grand Theft Auto V."
The PS4 ended up outselling the Xbox One in January as well, where journalist Geoff Keighley -- who spoke with PlayStation SVP Guy Longworth -- said PS4 sales in January nearly doubled the "nearest next gen competitor," which points to the Xbox One.

But the Xbox One was December 2013's winner with 908,000 consoles sold.

In mid-February, it was reported that Sony had sold 5.3 million PS4s globally since launch.

Sales of both consoles are being watched very closely, since many believe the months after the holiday season are more telling of which console wins the race rather than the November-December period, when everyone is spending anyway.

Both Microsoft and Sony released their respective consoles a week apart in November 2013, just in time for the holiday season.

I wonder if this is purely based on supply, the PS4 is pretty scarce right now. Sony seems to have diverted a lot of stock for the Japanese PS4 launch.

Yeah, PS4 is supply constrained, the XB1 isn't. So Sony's numbers will likely increase the gap again once the PS4 launch in Japan starts to pass.

Also, remember the Titanfall effect; the March/April numbers will be interesting to compare to May/June later this year.

I don't get Titanfall, it seems like one of those games people get behind because of a lack of options. It frankly reminds me of Unreal Tournament 10 years ago, and I know it won't be half as fun because it's on a console.

I'm sure it will be good and I would probably get it if I had an xbone. I'm liking the Indie games on the ps4 lately.

I don't get Titanfall...

"EA". That's all I need to know. Sim City EA. Battlefield 4 EA.

Even if I had an XB1 I wouldn't get it. But that's just me...

Yeah, reviews are nice. Let's wait and see if the EA servers go down, if they start banning accounts, see if save data gets corrupted, see if there's game killing glitches, etc.

EA don't make Titanfall. In fact they don't have anything to do with Titanfall, other than distributing physical copies to store and having exclusive rights to it on Origin.

They were not involved in the development of the engine (Valve) or the game (all Respawn) and they aren't (thank god) involved in the server back-end (all Azure for XB1 and PC).

The problems with Battlefield, Sim City, etc were all EA - EA handled the online, their teams (Dice and Maxis are owned by EA) handled development and they used their own in-house (seemingly broken) game engines. I wouldn't buy an EA game near release in the near future, but Titanfall is NOT an EA game, it's a game published and distributed by EA.

It's on PC too. I've heard positive things for the most part, from those who are playing it. Outside of PC gaming, it's a positive for XB1.

But the main thing the XB1 needs is a price cut. Wouldn't hurt to have a white variant and models with a larger HDD at the current price point, plus full external drive support (so I can hook up a multi-TB WD Black/Purple drive in an external enclosure). I hope Elop wakes up and smells the coffee.

Nah, i actually like Titanfall. I also liked modern warfare 2 (but not later call of duty games) That being said, i didn't buy it on the XBone. I bought it for PC. I have a 360, but that is the last microsoft console i'll ever own. I also almost bought a PS4, but cancelled it due to lack of quality launch titles. Sadly, when i visit the various walmarts, etc. i can find plenty of xbox ones, but no PS4s. WTF is sony doing?

Titanfall isn't the game changer people make it out to be. Most people aren't going to shell out over $500 to play a game on a system they didn't want beforehand.

I know, but I have really become accustomed to gaming on hte PS4... It's the controller that wins it. That and I have had a PS3 for gaming for sevearl years and havent upgraded my video card... I know, I know, PC master race. I have been gaming on PC since Doom, upgrading constantly, to the point even I thought I had issues. I am over it.

That's reasonable. It gets expensive to maintain a PC with good enough specs to run the games at quality settings. I am a bit surprised though that the controller, of all things, was what won it out for you. You prefer it over a mouse and keyboard?

RE: Supply
By retrospooty on 3/15/2014 8:37:55 AM , Rating: 2
It wasnt the cost, it was mostly the time and effort, and I was obsessive about it. If I could get it all back, I would want my time, not the cash LOL.

The controller, the comfort, and the fact that it is standardized among games is a big part too, but if something like this were standardized on PC it would go a long way for me anyhow. It looks nice.

It doesn't take what it used to since most games are ports from consoles a good system last a lot longer these days. I mid level video card and CPU is all you need.

Capable gaming PCs are cheaper than they've ever been. Even with a low $500 budget, all-in on everything, you can put together a very good and small mATX system with a GTX 750 Ti that will run nearly everything well. Bump up another $200-$300 towards the GPU and an SSD and its even better.

1080p gaming is very achievable with a budget these days. What will demand an increase in your budget are things like 1440p or multi-monitor gaming, or large SSD storage. The last thing is becoming less of an issue now that SSDs have come down to around $.50 per GB. 1440p+ is an unavoidable strain on performance that demands lots of graphics horsepower. Its the only reason I'm SLI right now, otherwise a mid-range card would be perfect.

That really surprised me. I can't imagine playing this game on a controller. Being able to whip-turn in this game is so important, not just for aiming but also for triangle jumping to scale parallel walls of buildings, traversing areas, etc etc.

The way you can move in this game is so important, and being able to turn faster with a mouse than with a gamepad is a huge advantage. This is all before we get into how much better mouse and keyboard is for any other shooter anyways. The movement and traversal options make it that much better in Titanfall.

Are you saying you prefer a controller vs. mouse+keyboard?

It is of course totally up to you, but I'm surprised if I understand you right. Even auto-aim and all the other aids build into console fps games I have not been able to move past feeling dragged down on a console.

To me the only thing that saves FPS games on the console is that everyone is in the same boat, which is also why the few experiments that have been made letting PC gamers and console gamers share the same server has not made it into customers.

I agree about Titanfall, but that doesn't change the fact that it has a very positive buzz right now.

It must really hurt your little anti-MS crusade to have the sales numbers for the two consoles so close in Feb. For a turd, it is selling pretty well. Or are you going to try to make excuses like others on this thread have. Just because the PS4 is selling way above even Sony's expectations doesn't mean the Xbox One isn't selling great as well.

anti-MS crusade?

Oh come now.

Yes the Xbox is selling better, thanks to the fastest price drop in console history, but it's still not even close to total PS4 units.

I'm not buying either console, I don't have a horse in this race. I just want to make sure Microsoft learned their lesson, and that it was NOT cool what they wanted to do with the Xbox. Not cool at all.

The Xbox has always attracted the lowest common denominator when it comes to gaming. Comically large dudes with an IQ of 40 chainsawing aliens to death in an ara of high-tech projectile weapons, that sort of rubbish. So I'm sure Titanfall will do well.

Yes, Gears was a pretty stupid game. But you could make pretty much the same complaint with the Final Fantasy series. Effeminate spiky-haired guys swinging comically huge swords in an era of projectile weapons.

Judging a whole gaming system based on one game is pretty short-sighted.

The PS4 isn't selling that great in Japan. The first 3 weeks put sales below 400k, which is significantly worse than what the Wii U sold in the 3 weeks after its' Japanese launch. I'm just as surprised as the next guy. I thought the PS4 sales in Japan would exceed the launch sales in the US, but they haven't come close.

How could it exceed the sales in the USA? We've got about 330 million people here, and they've got 128 million there.

The only way I could see that happening is if it were pretty unpopular here, and pretty popular there.

Dark Souls was a horrible console port that didn't even work out of the box.

As much as I like PC gaming, crap like that is why consoles have such mass appeal. The quality on a lot of PC games needs to be way higher. Developers treat it like an afterthought!

Do you know if DS2 for PC won't be utter garbage this time? I hope so.

By MrBlastman on 3/14/2014 2:34:32 PM , Rating: 2
It might have been a horrible port (it was) but it didn't stop me from playing it for 130 hours so far. I've loved every single minute of it. There was a simple resolution fix which also added in SSAO and cured most of my complaints. The only minor remaining one was an occasional drop in framerate which doesn't happen much (maybe in only two or three small parts of the game).

From what I hear, DS2 was designed on the PC from the start, then ported to consoles. The PC version will have superior textures among other things.

To be honest, I never really was bothered by the graphical quality of the first game. I thought it looked superb and perfectly captured the essence of that undead world. The sound, as well, was captivating.

I still play System Shock 1, however. So graphics aren't my first concern in any game I play.

Why does one console have to "win"?
By Shawn on 3/14/2014 5:29:40 PM , Rating: 3
As far as I'm concerned the sales numbers are pretty close especially considering the xbox one is $100 more. Look at how much better both consoles are selling compared the Wii U, and that's been out for an extra year. I'm interested to see what would happen if Microsoft dropped the price to match that of the PS4.

Still, why does it matter which console has the most sales? Do people really think one will drop out of the race if the sales figures aren't high enough? The only console that might happen to is the Wii U, but even then I think Nintendo will hold out as long as they can.

The xbox360 was the clear winner of the last generation, especially since it came out earlier and was about $200 cheaper than the PS3. Sony narrowed the gap though by reducing the price and by the end of it's run it had some very good exclusives. Sony didn't drop out then and there is no way Microsoft would drop out now, even if their sales were much worse than they actually are. Both companies have too much invested.

Bottom line is, who cares which console wins? Both consoles will probably get the majority of the same games with each getting some exclusives. I'm waiting for the prices to drop and more games to come out before I pick up one of the other, but I'm definitely waiting to see what Microsoft does with the multimedia aspect of their console. The xbox360 has seen major software improvements over the years but the PS3, not so much.

Either way I will probably get both consoles eventually, just as I have both the xbox360 and the ps3 now.

Buy the one you want.

Amen. Seriously, too many people get emotional over one console (or GPU,CPU,OS,caffeinated/decaffeinated beverage) over another as if their personal identity or value depends on it.

If you have emotional ties to a product you have to pay money for, and it's not because it was willed to you by your great grandmother's uncle's babysitter's dogsitter's adopted iguana's petfood supplier's cousin thrice removed, then you lose and marketers win. Marketers want to create emotional ties between you and their products because that is how they hook you. Yes, as in an addiction. If you have emotional ties to a product so much that you have to publicly decry a competing product, you either need to check yourself into rehab, or re-evaluate your values system.

And while it was just February (and again, Xbox One outsold PS4 in December), it still goes to show that Xbox One, at $100 more, is keeping pace with PS4.

Also, this is disingenuous. Sony noted 6 million consoles sold in MARCH. Microsoft noted 3.9 in JANUARY. Sony said it sold 4.2 million in January, a much fairer and reasonable comparison.

Again, I like both Playstation and Xbox, and I have no plans to buy either for several years (I have a gaming PC, and many PS3 and Xbox 360 games I still need to get to). What I am angry about, and ACTUALLY talking about in my now unfairly downvoted comment, is the fanboys who only offer hyperbole and specious "facts" in order to denigrate the other system.

After the years of bashing XB fans in the 360 vs ps3 era its no wonder PS fans are exaggerating and throwing every victory in XB fans faces.

There has been a complete role reversal, so far, the new gen is still new enough that a year from now XB could retake the no1 spot though. Some PS people could end up eating crow because of the early gloating.

RE: Lying Xbox Haters

360 beat PS3 by what kind of margin? Less than 10%? Current numbers are hardly what you call a "complete reversal". That's a term you use for the previous gen, when Sony should have dominated with PS3 given that PS2 outsold XBox by a factor of 6.

In any case, XBO is far from the sales disaster that everyone seems to be claiming here. It certainly could have been much worse.

RE: Lying Xbox Haters
By BZDTemp on 3/14/2014 7:33:15 PM , Rating: 2
Considering the 360 had a substantial head start the 360 it had the lead for some time, but saying the 360 "beat" the PS3 is simply wrong. Today the 360 and the PS3 is even both at around 83 million units sold, so considering the 360 a year before the PS3 you ought to find a different word.

I'd give you one thing though. The XBO sales could have been worse, but seeing as Microsoft has already resorted to dropping the price it seems to me the numbers are certainly a disappointment - just like it is a disappointment that once again the more powerful hardware is not from Redmond.

I take offense to that. First of all, I game on BOTH platforms. More on the PC than the PS3/4, mostly because I enjoy 2560x1440 resolution graphics (of which I could have bought two consoles for the two video cards I bought required to run it at high that will be outdated in two years).

Second, I don't always sit at home by myself and game. I go places. Family, friends, parties, etc. I take my console with me and make a gaming party and memories with it (and share home videos, pictures, etc. that is on it).

Third, when I do game at home with my PS3 and PS4, I game with my real world friends online since most of them aren't into PC gaming because it's so expensive to keep up with (see above comments of my first point again). Oh, and I'm not using near as much power when I console game over my PC gaming rig.

Everything has its pros and cons, pal.
