Killzone 2 out sells Halo Wars

Sony has sold 2 million units of the PlayStation 3 and 3 million units of the PSP in the United Kingdom according to a MCVUK report. MCVUK had the opportunity to talk to UK MD Ray Maguire in an exclusive interview where he discusses Sony’s recent successes in the region.

Killzone 2 was discussed extensively due to the recent success it has enjoyed. Killzone 2 out sold Halo Wars to reach number one on the UK sales charts earlier in the week. The much hyped sequel is the second fastest selling game behind Gran Turismo 5: Prologue. In Maguire’s own words, "Everyone is reporting really good sales of Killzone 2," Maguire said. "We've seen not just a really good day one – but also for the game to be a good solid seller all the way through We’ve got good bundles out there with hardware and software and that has picked up nicely according to our early numbers.”

Maguire mentions how Killzone 2 is a hardware system seller stating, "It certainly has helped drive hardware I think there were a lot of people out there who wanted something which really showed the power of PlayStation 3 – and now they can see it it’s a reason for them to get on board.”

He also discusses his belief that successfully selling 2 million units of the PS3 at a high price point shows the PS3 is a product with longevity. He states, "Obviously PS3 is a premium product with a premium price tag. Interestingly, because it has sold two million at a higher price, it suggests more longevity of the PS3 because we have chipped away at the top end of the triangle."

For the PlayStation Portable, Maguire discusses how he believes there is renewed interest in the PSP due to the newer models of the device that have been recently released. He said, "There was a renewed vigour from consumers once we had the Slim ‘n’ Lite out there as it emphasized the portability of the device.”

"Killzone 2 is quite possibly the most hyped game ever released for the Playstation 3. Four years ago, Sony wowed E3 with Killzone 2 footage that looked too good to be true. At the time, it was. Developer Guerilla Games later confirmed the "trailer" was a target render of what they hoped to accomplish on the Playstation 3.

That the final product realizes the promise of that early footage is a testament to the power of the PS3.

Killzone 2 is, put simply, the best looking game I've seen on any console."

Seriously, this game is really awesome. My Xbox friends are jealous.

I own both consoles, I think KZ2 is nice, but if anyone is jealous of any game, they need to seek help. Honestly if you start picking at KZ2, the game is short, the levels are really not that big at all, & the game does look great but that's what I bought the PS3 for. Other than the visuals the game really does nothing different than other FPS, & why coop campaign was left out when it's even in the PSP Killzone game baffles me. I have completed the game twice now playing online, which is nice but I prefer COD4. Like every game the graphics will wear off, it's then what you have left that deteremine to me if a game is great or not.

Sounds a lot like a certain little game that took over the Orange Box with the fury of... OK. it's 3 AM and I'm out of wit.

Seriously. This is the beaten path where others failed; stunning graphics and a fairly typical game underneath aren't a formula for a hit. Take movies for example, animation is a low quality reality but can deliver a story just as effectively as their live action counterparts.

Only in rare instances - (I.E. iD Software's Quake) can you mix great graphics with a crap story and have a hit.

PS£ ?

they love ppl paying top triange? prices for a ps3 and a game.

Get with the program. PC's are getting little lovin. and PC users blow £900+ on i7 cpu/board/mem. then £400+ on a top spec vid card.

If you want to write alleged "State of Art" games. Come to PC.
you can tell if your game is pimp by how much its PIRATED.

lol

Thanks Stephen

There's no doubt the PS3 is doing well worldwide and that there's far more to its viability and longevity than just U.S. sales numbers.

Thanks Stephen.

it is a blog, so hes free to post whatever he wants, but this article isn't very clear. is this 2 million in a month, or 2 million total? if it's 2mil this month that is a decent story, but if not this reeks of flamebait.

The linked article is pretty clear that it's total sales.

I wouldn't be happy with 2 Mil sales on a console released in 2006. The numbers aren't bad, just not stunning.

From the article, it's refreshing to see a Sony exec write with some humility. For once, they're not claiming market domination and that other console's are a gimmick. I think their words could be summed up as, "Hey, we have something that we're proud of. We have a significant market. Come take a look." Nobody has to buy into the story. It's not flamewars.
