Another day, another PS3 firmware update

Sony is keeping to its promise of adding continual improvements to its PlayStation 3 console. Sony's last update for the PS3 nixed the "Install Other OS" feature from "fat" PS3 -- the move resulted in one UK PS3 owner getting a refund of $129 from Amazon.

The latest firmware update doesn't bring back the removed features, but it does add support for 3D stereoscopic gaming. In addition, it adds a few improvements to the PS3's Trophies:

Trophy enhancements –- Now you can more easily sort trophies in the [Trophy Collection] and [Comparing Trophy] sections. Sorting can be done with [Trophy Collection] in the [Game Category] and also when comparing trophies with your friends in the [Friend Category]

    • Trophy Folder (Title List) can be sorted by game name/ by title according to the date in which you earned your last trophy (ascending/descending)
    • Add-on list (Group list) can be sorted by original/the date in which you earned your last trophy (ascending/descending)
    • Trophy list can be sorted by original/trophy name/grade/date of obtaining the trophy (ascending/descending)

You can upgrade to the latest PS3 firmware using the System Update feature within the XMB.

So does that mean I can view the picture at the top in 3D stereoscopic view on my PS3 now?

*Eagerly looks for remote*

No, that picture is not officially supported by Sony's proprietary software/hardware. :P

You must be referring to the proprietary hard drive on the Microsoft Xbox 360... :-P

At least Sony is a lot more open than Microsoft with their over priced hard drives, their non-standard wireless control, their cables... heck on the original XBOX the four gameports on the front was USB ports with special connectors.

I take it you don't remember the Sony Boomboxes, Home theater systems, speakers, and etc.

They had this little plug-in port that while it resembled basic wire or banana plugs, they were just a little to small to fit standard size. One had to buy special adapters for it.

I wasn't talking about the consoles at all. :)

Leave it to the über nerds to turn a "discussion" about chicks into a Microsoft vs. Sony fight. WTG guys!

Console availability?

The story I want to know about is what's the cause of the current lack of ps3 consoles @ BB, target, walmart, sears and maybe other places but haven't had time to check.

I was in Gamestop the other day, and the guy was telling a customer that the shortage was due--of all things-- to a lack of HDDs from the supplier. I don't know if that's true, but that's what he said.

I don't believe that it's a shortage of HDD they're getting cheaper & cheaper everywhere, i just looked online & noticed Blu-ray drives for pc's were pricier than the last time I checked a couple weeks ago. Maybe that gamestop clerk got BD & HDD mixed up.

Steroscopic 3D
By jdietz on 4/22/2010 12:10:59 PM , Rating: 2
Any word on games that use the feature? What is the first one and when will it be out? How to use the feature? Where is it in XMB?

There's the 3D Batman game with regular 3D glasses. That's been out in Asia for a while now.

The Avatar game I think should support 3D as well, although I'm not sure exactly what kind/what the requirements are, but it has cross platform 3D of some sort.
